High Bridge to host UFO mania virtual talk on Thursday, Oct. 29

HIGH BRIDGECouncilwoman Natalie Ferry will host a virtual online speaker event at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, about Howard Menger, a High Bridge resident who claimed to have been in contact with extraterrestrials who took him to the Moon and revealed technology secrets and a path to world peace and harmony.

In the 1950s the United States went through a period of popular belief in flying saucers and belief in visitors from other planets. High Bridge was at the center of this mania. Menger’s experiences are memoralized in his book, “High Bridge Incident.”

Menger became a media sensation, appearing in the local and national press, and on network television and radio. He published books and records and lectured widely on his purported experiences and beliefs. But he’s been forgotten in local history.

David Goessling, local historian, will provide a biography of Menger, and an outline of his beliefs and activities from the 1940s to the 1970s. He will try to put him in the context of the times, as well as in the High Bridge and Hunterdon area, and help local residents rediscover this odd, compelling but strangely forgotten part of local history.

This talk will be illustrated with photos, recordings and video both by and about Menger.

The Historical Committee depends on sponsorships and donations to be able to present events like this. This event is free, although donations are greatly appreciated. To donate, visit https://bit.ly/3o5Q48u and choose Historical Committee.
