The QAnon cult is laughable but it’s also dangerous

This summer a relative told me about a movement they were following online: QAnon, based around the postings of a former CIA worker known as “Q”. I was told that celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres are actually Satan-worshippers running a global child-trafficking operation. They capture children and torture them in order to extract a substance which gives them eternal youthfulness. Hillary Clinton had been running a paedophile ring out of a Washington pizza joint.

The hero in this story was Donald Trump, who was going to bring about a day of reckoning known as The Storm. By the time I was sombrely told “don’t even get me started on Oprah, she’s up to her neck in it” I was weeping with laughter at the craziness.
