Plan for 5G mast outside Derby pub ‘unacceptable’

Plans to build a new 5G mast outside a Derby pub have been branded “unacceptable” by worried councillors.

Vodafone has submitted a planning application to Derby City Council with the aim of installing a new 17.5-metre mast outside The Robin pub in Mickleover.

The application from the phone giant is the latest of several 5G mast applications to be submitted for Derby throughout the year.

5G is said to be the latest “transformational technology” in regards to mobile communication and is designed to cope with increased mobile internet demand.

But some people claim that 5G technology is dangerous for public health and conspiracy theorists have claimed it is the cause of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, any links between 5G and the coronavirus have been emphatically dismissed by experts.

Vodafone want the mast to be situated outside pub on Devonshire Drive.

But Mickleover councillors Matthew Holmes, Alison Holmes and Miles Pattison say the mast would “severely impact” nearby homes and would become an “imposing and unnecessary addition” to the area.

In a letter of objection to the city council, the councillors state: “We must relay our strongest objections to this proposed location. It would severely impact on nearby residential properties and the local amenity.

“To impose such a significant installation in a residential district centre pedestrian shopping area is unacceptable.

“The mast at a height of the mast will represent an imposing and unnecessary addition within the vicinity placed in this location.

“There is already a mast installation close by on the junction with East Avenue, therefore offering the required coverage location that is being sought. “

Vodafone say the application is the “most suitable option that balances operational need with local planning policies and national planning policy guidance”.

The firm adds: “It will deliver public benefit in terms of the mobile services it will provide.”
