Sidney Powell Asks Supreme Court To Hear Conspiracy-Ridden ‘Kraken’ Lawsuit
Topline
Former Trump legal advisor Sidney Powell has filed an emergency petition for the U.S. Supreme Court to hear one of her widely-maligned “Kraken” lawsuits, which is rife in conspiracy theories, in a last-ditch effort before the Electoral College meets to select Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
Key Facts
Her lawsuit seeks to de-certify the election results in Georgia, which Biden won, by baselessly claiming “massive election fraud.”
The suit specifically targets Dominion Voting Systems, making unsubstantiated claims that the systems were not secure and invited fraud, a claim that there is no evidence for and one that has been rejected by top Georgia officials, including Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
Similar “Kraken” suits in Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan have failed, and her Georgia suit was rejected by a lower court.
The nickname for the suits came after Powell promised to “release the Kraken” during an appearance on Fox Business, and the suits have since gained a massive following among followers of QAnon.
What To Watch For
The Electoral College meets on Monday.
Key Background
Powell has pressed on with her suits aiming to overturn the election results in favor of President Donald Trump, who soundly lost to President-elect Biden by more than 7 million votes, even as the Trump campaign officially cut ties with her as she pushed theories more and more on the fringe. Powell’s lawsuits have also become known for obvious gaffes, like misspellings and referencing places that don’t exist. That decision to dump Powell has done little to turn around the Trump legal team’s fortunes, which earlier this week—along with Republican allies—recorded its 50th loss in post-election lawsuits.
Surprising Fact
Dominion Systems were also used in several states Trump won.
