HBO, Spike Lee Team for 9/11 20th Anniversary Doc – The Hollywood Reporter
Spike Lee and HBO will mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with a multi-part documentary chronicling the way New York has survived the past two decades.
The project, titled NYC Epicenters 9/11→ 2021½, is in production and will offer a portrait of New Yorkers as they rebuild and rebound, whether from the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 or the coronavirus pandemic of the past year. Lee will marshal what HBO calls a “staggering amount of visual imagery” and the first-hand accounts of people from all walks of life.
The documentary will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max later this year to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the attacks.
“As a New Yawker who bleeds orange and blue (the colors of New York City), I’m proud to have a ‘Spike Lee Joint’ about how our/my city dealt with being the epicenters of 9/11 and COVID-19,” said Lee. “With over 200 interviews, we dig deep into what makes NYC the greatest city on this God’s earth and also the diverse citizens who make it so. Over centuries pundits and straight haters have proclaimed NYC was dead and stinkin’, only to be proved wrong. You will lose ya money betting against New York, New York. And dat’s da truth, Ruth. Be safe. Peace and love.”
NYC Epicenters is the latest project in a long-standing relationship Lee has with HBO. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker has previously directed 4 Little Girls, When the Levees Broke, and most recently David Byrne’s American Utopia (among other projects) for HBO.
“We’re thrilled to have another groundbreaking HBO documentary event from Spike Lee,” said Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham, co-heads of HBO Documentary Films. “From documenting the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans to the 9/11 attack on New York City and beyond, we treasure Spike’s singular capacity to chronicle and pay tribute to the human toll of these historic events while bearing profound witness to the strength and resiliency of the human spirit.”
HBO Documentary Films and Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks are producing NYC Epicenters. Lee produces and directs; Barry Alexander Brown and Adam Gough are editing.
Lee is repped by ICM Partners and Grubman Shire. ICM Partners handling international sales.
