April 24, 1950: Flying saucer or meteor streaked over Augusta – The Augusta Chronicle

When a meteor streaked across Augusta’s April night sky, it jammed The Augusta Chronicle’s newsroom switchboard with anxious callers and prompted the following reaction from the newspaper’s editorial page:
“Flying saucer conscious” Augusta, and others in this area, were quick to develop a severe case of the jitters when they saw a fiery ball shooting through the skies Monday night. It turned out to be nothing more alarming than either a flaming star or a meteor flashing through space.
Just to show how many different impressions people can get when they see an eerie object in the sky, the reports from the outlying districts near Greenville indicated that the fiery ball was either moving fast or slow, was either fiery red, blue or orange, had a tail in back or front or in both, and looked like either a skyrocket or a large rubber ball.
Now who was right?
