Trump claims ‘massive election fraud’ took place in NH in November election
Former President Donald Trump charged in a statement Thursday there was “massive election fraud in New Hampshire and the 2020 presidential election” in November. He congratulated “the great patriots” of Windham for “their incredible fight to seek out the truth.”State and Windham officials are about to have a forensic audit conducted of the state representatives’ race in the town. The audit team prescribed in a state law quickly passed earlier in the legislative session is being organized and audit is expected to take place within the next several weeks.A video surfaced earlier this week showing Trump telling wedding reception guests at his Mar-a-Lago resort to watch the recount taking place in Maricopa County, Arizona – a recount that has been the subject of much controversy for its alleged partisan overtones and alleged lack of transparency. President Joe Biden won the state by more than 20,000 votes.“Let’s see what they find,” Trump told the crowd. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they found thousands and thousands and thousands of votes. So, we’re going to watch that very closely.”Then, suggesting a domino effect of sorts, Trump said, “And after that, you’ll watch Pennsylvania and you’ll watch Georgia, and you’re going to watch Michigan and Wisconsin – and you’re watching New Hampshire.“They found a lot of votes up in New Hampshire just now – you saw that.”“Because this was a rigged election,” Trump continued. “Everybody knows it. And, we’re going to be watching it very closely.”On Wednesday, Trump confidante and senior adviser Corey Lewandowski, a Windham resident, denied that Trump’s comments meant that the former president was alleging there was widespread voter fraud in the town of Windham, or in the state, during his talk at the reception.“What he’s saying is, if there are discrepancies in the machines, let’s find out why,” Lewandowski said. “Let’s understand what transpiredBut on Thursday morning, Trump left no doubt that he felt there was “massive” election fraud in New Hampshire. His statement, issued through his Save America PAC, says:“Congratulations to the great Patriots of Windham, New Hampshire for their incredible fight to seek out the truth on the massive Election Fraud which took place in New Hampshire and the 2020 Presidential Election. The spirit for transparency and justice is being displayed all over the Country by media outlets which do not represent Fake News. People are watching in droves as these Patriots work tirelessly to reveal the real facts of the most tainted and corrupt Election in American history. Congratulations Windham — look forward to seeing the results.”Gov. Chris Sununu rejected Trump’s claim, telling WMUR in a statement:“A discrepancy of 300 votes out of over 800,000 cast does not constitute ‘massive election fraud.’ In fact, it is proof that New Hampshire’s voting process is the most reliable, safe, and secure in the country, and that we will ensure every last vote is accurately accounted for.” The governor on Wednesday, prior to Trump’s statement, told WMUR: “As I said when I signed the audit bill, our elections in New Hampshire last year were safe, secure, and reliable — and that is a fact. Over 800,000 votes were cast in New Hampshire last November.“There were 16 recounts, and in only one town – a town in which the President carried — we only saw very minor isolated issues, which is proof our system works. This bill will help us audit an isolated incident in Windham and keep the integrity of our system intact.”Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas called Trump’s statement “debunked lies” and dangerous.”Four months ago today, rioters stormed the Capitol over these same debunked lies,” Pappas tweeted. “Now former President Trump is again spreading dangerous misinformation.”Let me be clear: there was no ‘massive election fraud in New Hampshire, and to say otherwise is a threat to our Republic.”Lewandowski could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday.Windham Selectman Bruce Breton, a staunch Trump supporter, said, “I thank the president from taking the time to thank the patriots of Windham. When the audit is completed, we’ll find out what the real problem is.”He said he read Trump’s statement to mean the former presdent was referring to Windham when he used the term “massive election fraud.”With discrepancies of 300 votes for four Republican candidates and 99 votes for the top vote-getting Democratic candidate between the Election Day total and recount totals, “That is a large amount for the town of Windham,” Breton said.Trump’s new statement was not the first time the former president claimed without evidence widespread voter fraud took place in the state. He did so several times in reference to the 2016 presidential election in the state, which he lost by a mere 2,700 votes to Hillary Clinton while defeating Clinton for the presidency. In the 2020 election, Trump lost New Hampshire by more than 59,000 votes to Democrat Joe Biden.
