READ: Jan. 6 attack suspect Doug Jensen’s attorney says he ‘became a victim of numerous conspiracy theories’

U.S. Capitol attack suspect Doug Jensen of Des Moines is asking the courts to release him on bond pending trial, five months after he was arrested.

Jensen, who was widely photographed confronting and chasing police officers inside the Capitol during the Jan. 6 event, was ordered held in detention after his arrest.

His new motion, filed Monday, seeks to revisit that decision, arguing that Jensen did not engage in any violence or property destruction within the Capitol, and that other suspects charged with similar conduct have been granted pretrial release since his arrest.

“Doug Jensen became a victim of numerous conspiracy theories that were being fed to him over the internet by a number of very clever people, who were uniquely equipped with slight, if any, moral or social consciousness,” his attorney wrote. “Jensen’s initial attraction to QANON was its stated mission to eliminate pedophiles from society. A fiercely protective family man, this was a powerful theme for him to latch onto.”

Prosecutors indicated in a hearing Tuesday that Jensen has been in talks to resolve the case with a plea deal, but that the issue of pretrial release was proving to be a sticking point in negotiations.

U.S. District Court Judge Timothy Kelly in Washington, D.C., has scheduled a hearing June 24 on the matter. Prosecutors have until June 17 to file a written brief opposing the motion, and Jensen will have until June 21 to file a written response.
