Image shows elderly fisherman’s horrific injuries after kickboxer broke his jaw in road rage attack – Teesside Live

A graphic image of an elderly man has revealed his horrific injuries after a kickboxer launched a violent and unprovoked attack.

Matthew Thomas Brady’s “high-speed road rage” led to his victim Brian Sowerby suffering a fractured jaw.

The 21-year-old tailgated the fisherman throwing a “champagne shaped bottle” out of his car window as he pursued the victim along the A66 at 70 to 80mph.

But the dad was left unconscious near to Dogs Trust Darlington when Brady launched his horrific assault.

Teesside Crown Court previously heard how the victim reached the charity to find help, when Brady “punched him several times causing him to fall to the floor” on January 3, last year.

The attacker then delivered a “massive blow to the head” by kicking the fisherman resulting him fracturing his jaw.

The 13-minute incident of “crass stupidity” has left Mr Sowerby suffering flashbacks and anxiety.

The Norton dad-of-one admitted dangerous driving and grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to 22 months behind bars on Friday.

Peter Sabiston, prosecuting, said the Mr Sowerby was driving on the A66 at around 2.30pm on January 3, last year, when the defendant was driving behind him a black Saloon car.

Brady was driving between 70 and 80mph and “flashing” his lights at the victim’s car.

Mr Sowerby then pulled his van to the left hand side of the dual carriageway when Brady overtook him and applied his brakes, known as “brake checking” before throwing a “champagne shaped bottle” out of the car window causing the victim to “swerve”.

The Middlesbrough court heard how the victim tried to seek refuge at Dogs Trust Darlington and got out of his vehicle to ask “what this was all about” only for Brady to get out of his vehicle and punched him several times, sending him to the floor.

When the victim was on the floor, he then kicked him to the head, fracturing his jaw.

Mr Sabiston added that Brady was a “kickboxer” and “punched him in the ear which put him to the ground”.

Mr Sowerby recalled a “massive blow to the head” then woke up in an ambulance being transported to Darlington Memorial Hospital.

The court heard how he had an enjoyable day fishing before the incident which still ‘haunts him’.

In a victim impact statement, Mr Sowerby said the attack has affected him “financially, mentally and physically”.

The self-employed pest control worker told how he had lost over £4,000 income after being unable to work following the incident and being affected by the covid-19 pandemic until April 27, last year.

The dad suffers “flashbacks”, anxiety, is not able to drive past the location of the attack in Sadberge and is still under a consultant at James Cook University Hospital for his jaw.

Ian West, mitigating, told how Brady was 19-years-old at the time of the incident and described the incident as “crass stupidity arising from road rage”.

The court heard how the defendant is a “sensible and hardworking man” with one child and another on the way.

Recorder Simon Jackson QC jailed Brady for 22 months, with a six month concurrent sentence for dangerous driving, and disqualified him from driving for 23 months.

He was also ordered to pay the Mr Sowerby £2,000 compensation.
