Renee Cote: Libby’s anti-vax stand doesn’t serve Maine

I’m vaccinated, I work from home, and I don’t have school-aged children, so I’m reasonably well insulated from COVID-19–related problems. But like everyone else I’m at risk for breakthrough infection because not enough people are getting vaccinated and too many people are refusing to wear masks indoors. And like many others, I can’t visit a person close to me because of lockdown in a care facility due to breakthrough infection.

So it is truly infuriating to read about the antics of state Rep. Laurel Libby, front page in the Sun Journal on Aug. 19, declaring “war” on vaccine and mask mandates. (It should be noted that a recent Ipsos poll showed that 64% of those polled support government mask mandates, and 69% support their local school districts requiring masks in schools.) It looks like Rep. Libby ran for state office looking for an anti-vax platform to advance her career in GOP circles rather than to serve the people of her district.

During the local election in 2020 there wasn’t much coverage of Ms. Libby’s anti-vax activities. It remains to be seen whether a candidate devoted to those activities during a worldwide pandemic will be successful in 2022.
