5G conspiracy theorists caught on CCTV torching phone mast for second time in a year

Police are hunting for a suspected arsonist after a 5G mobile phone mast was torched for the second time.

Officers released footage that appears to shows the 60ft mast near Chaddesden, Derby, engulfed in flames at around 8.15pm on Monday.

Firefighters and police dashed to the scene of the blaze after residents living nearby reported seeing smoke and fire coming from the phone mast.

It is the second time the mast has been targeted by arsonists after a blaze at the equipment in May last year in what police called a case of arson.

That first attack took place just two days after it was erected near the A61 off Sir Frank Whittle Road.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said of the most recent fire: “We are releasing footage of a fire at a phone mast in Derby as we appeal for witnesses to come forward.

“Fire crews alerted us to the incident, off the A61 Sir Frank Whittle Road, just after 8.15pm yesterday (Monday 20 December)

“The road was closed while they dealt with the fire, and for some time this morning while the area was made safe. It has now re-opened but the footpath which goes past the mast remains closed.

“While officers believe the mast may have been tampered with, the cause of the fire is indeterminate.

“We would like to speak to any witnesses or anyone who noticed anything suspicious just before or just after incident.”

Some protesters had made claims the masts cause health problems while other wilder theories suggest 5G “radiation” spreads Covid-19.

This was part of a national problem that saw 5G phone masts being damaged up and down the country by protesters in the mistaken belief that the masts could cause health problems.

Some protesters claimed that 5G phone masts could damage public health and conspiracy theorists believe the masts could even be used to transmit Covid-19 which is not the case.
