Letter to the editor: Tracking down the facts on 2020 election fraud
To understand why some folks (mostly Republicans) believe the 2020 election was stolen by Joe Biden and the Democrats, and thus why we need to secure (restrict) voting rights, I did a Google search looking for evidence of this “fact.” I skipped over the dozens of links to mainstream media accounts of studies and court cases that found there is no such evidence because my Republican friends would simply dismiss these as “fake news.”
Finally, I found the website of the Heritage Foundation, an American conservative think tank that has been influential in steering policy in every Republican administration since Ronald Reagan. The foundation told The New York Times Magazine in 2018 that 66 employees and alumni were given positions in the administration of Donald Trump.
The foundation maintains an Election Fraud Database that documents 1,340 cases of election fraud. If you dig into the database, you find that this number includes mostly individuals rather than organizations and cases going back 36 years to 1986.
I examined the database for 13 states, including nine “battleground” states, and found that of the 531 cases of fraud in those states, only six related to the 2020 general election, and of these four (67 percent) were Republicans trying to vote multiple times.
So, is this why so many Republicans think there is cheating going on? Because they are the ones doing the cheating?
