WHO partners with German telecom company to create global COVID-19 vaccine passport app

The World Health Organization (WHO) has partnered with German telecommunications company Deutsche Telekom to create a global Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine verification app.

Deutsche Telekom is one of the world’s largest telecommunications corporations. The WHO’s partnership is with one of the company’s subsidiaries, T-Systems, an internationally operating information technology company.

The WHO’s partnership with the company is meant to “link every person on the planet to a QR code digital ID” that will allow for the establishment of a global vaccine passport verification system. Once tested to check COVID-19 vaccinations, this QR code-based software solution would be expanded to allow the app to check for other vaccinations as well, such as polio or yellow fever.

“COVID-19 affects everyone. Countries will therefore only emerge from the pandemic together,” claimed Garrett Mehl, unit head of the WHO’s Department of Digital Health and Innovation. “Vaccination certificates that are tamper-proof and digitally verifiable build trust.”

“WHO is therefore supporting member states in building national and regional trust networks and verification technology,” he continued. “The WHO’s gateway service also serves as a bridge between regional systems. It can be also be used as part of future vaccination campaigns and home-based records.”

Deutsche Telekom has not disclosed the financial details of its partnership with the WHO, but the company has recently raised its outlook for the remainder of 2022 after reporting a solid first quarter.

The revenue of Deutsche Telekom and its subsidiaries increased by 6.2 percent in the first quarter of the year. The company expects to earn more than $38 billion by the end of the year, up from the previous outlook of $37.9 billion.

“Health is a strategic growth area for T-Systems. Winning this contract underscores our commitment to the industry,” said CEO Adel Al-Saleh. “Corona has a grip on the world. Digitization keeps the world running. Digital vaccination certificates like the European Union’s are key to this. We are pleased to be able to support the WHO in the fight against the pandemic.”

Global vaccine passport system part of WHO’s pandemic treaty

The WHO’s partnership with the company comes as it is pulling out all the stops to get governments to sign on to its global pandemic treaty. But concerns have been raised that the systems the WHO will establish represent a risk to the sovereignty of member states.

If the WHO’s plans proceed accordingly, the treaty could come into effect by 2024. When it does, governing authority during a pandemic will effectively be transferred to the WHO and, by extension, the United Nations.

A component of the WHO’s plans is a global vaccine passport system. The organization claims this system is necessary to support its efforts in fighting pandemics.

“This system will be universal, mandatory, transnational and operated by unelected bureaucrats in a captured NGO who already bungled the COVID pandemic response,” warned the Brownstone Institute, a think tank that is opposed to COVID-19 measures that deprive people of health freedom.
