UFO sightings: Meteor that crashed off Australian coast may have been a UFO, scientists say

A Harvard professor believes a meteor that crashed in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, near Australia, nearly a decade ago may be an alien spacecraft.

Harvard professor Avi Loeb is now planning a $2.2 million expedition to retrieve the mysterious object.

The meteorite crashed into the Pacific Ocean in 2014, about 160km off the coast of Australia’s near neighbour Papua New Guinea.

Loeb told Sunrise he believes the expedition may help answer questions about whether we are alone in the universe.

“The material of it is tougher than iron, based on the data, so the question is whether it’s just an unusual rock or perhaps a spacecraft from another civilisation,” he said.

“I was able to receive full funding for this expedition to Papua New Guinea and we will scoop the ocean floor and figure out the composition of the object.”

According to the Science Times, the space rock is only the third known object of its kind to land on Earth.

The other two – Oumuamua and Borisov – landed on Earth in 2017 and 2018, the outlet said.

Loeb added he “definitely” believes aliens exist, however, more research needs to be done and he hopes this expedition may uncover answers.

“We know that most of the stars, were formed five billion years before the Sun,” he said.

“So, there was plenty of time for any civilisation next to them, and there are tens of billions of them in the Milky Way galaxy alone, there was plenty of time for them to send probes that would reach us.

“Even if they were propelled by chemical rockets … out of cosmic modesty we should assume that we are not the smartest kid in our cosmic neighbourhood, and we can learn from them.

“The only way to find out is we just need to look up, and down, as well in the ocean floor.”

Loeb added he has already promised to display anything that is found inside the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
