UFO sightings ‘way up’ despite official reports: Expert

UFO sightings in Maine are “way up” despite what the official reports say, according to UFO author and expert Normar Slevik.

Numbers released by the the Mutual UFO Network and National UFO Reporting Center report only 59 sightings in Maine last year, down from 73 in 2021 and 98 in 2020, according to a report.

Slevik, who said he had an experience with a UFO at a young age, argues that those numbers do not represent the full picture of what is really occurring in the sky.

“There’s a lot of sightings that are happening in Maine that are going unreported through official means,” Slevik said. “But sightings, if you look on social media, you’ll find that they are way up.”

People “go to social media,” according to Slevik. “They either text a friend or go to social media, and it could be in some sort of Facebook group that’s dedicated to strange happenings or they’re just putting it on their own personal page.”

Another reason why sightings could be under reported is because neither the Mutual UFO Network nor National UFO Reporting Center promotes themselves as a place to report sightings.

“Within my world, within my circle of colleagues who have an interest or even a passing interest in UFOs, we know of [the organizations], however there’s a whole lot of people that have no idea that there are reporting agencies out there. So, they are just taking their sightings to social media.”

Still, not every report is credible, according to the expert.

“All that comes down to is talking to the person,” Slevik said. “I like to, you know, see their body language, hear the tone in their voice, get the look in their eye.”

“Around 20% of the people I talk to, I am convinced that they are convinced they saw something extraterrestrial or other worldly.”

UFOs do not equal aliens, Slevik noted.

“For quite some time the acronym UFO has become synonymous with extraterrestrial, and even as a UFO author and researcher I’m very quick to tell people that just because something is unidentified, doesn’t mean that it’s extraterrestrial,” he said.

Drones and helicopters can often be confused for UFOs, according to Slevik.
