Does photo show UFO over FC Juárez Bravos soccer game?

Is it a UFO? A speck of dust? A hoax?

The El Paso-Juárez Borderland attracts travelers from around the globe. But how about from out of this world?

The FC Juárez Bravos professional soccer team on Tuesday shared a photo taken by a fan of a UFO — or something — supposedly flying high above their stadium during their game Saturday against the Xolos of Tijuana.

The photo shows a bright yellow sun starting to set behind Estadio Olympico Benito Juárez, with Downtown El Paso to the right of the stadium located next to the border. A close-up of a small dark speck next to the sun looks like — a flying saucer.

“Help, Jaime Maussan,” FC Juárez said, referring to Mexico’s most-famous ufologist in a tongue-in-cheek tweet complete with emojis of flying saucers and aliens. “A fan sent us this photograph he took during the game vs. Xolos, where supposedly a UFO can be seen. Is it or isn’t it (a UFO)?”

Maybe it’s the pandemic, political unrest or these times of uncertainty, but the photo comes at a time of renewed interest in UFOs.

The U.S. government has received more than 500 reports of UFOs, according to a recently released declassified version of an annual report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, USA TODAY reported.

Wooden alien figurines are offered for sale on an outside table in Roswell, New Mexico July 3, 2021. Downtown businesses have embraced the city's role in an alleged 1947 UFO crash, turning the notoriety into a four-day festival surrounding Independence Day.

Hundreds of UFOs, referred to as “unidentified aerial phenomena” (UAP) in the government report, have been reported since 2021 alone. The U.S. Southwest and Mexico have long been a magnet for strange sightings.

In Mexico, a UFO is known as an OVNI, acronym for Objeto Volador No Identificado (Spanish for Unidentified Flying Object).

Whether the FC Juárez photo is the real thing is unexplained. But the Bravos didn’t need extraterrestrial help, defeating Tijuana 3-0.
