With Florida ranking high in UFO sightings, astronomers ask what’s up there?
SUNRISE – South Florida has had many UFO sightings over the weeks, so CBS4’s Gabrielle Arzola looked into what’s behind those bizarre sightings in the sky.
“We’ve noticed that it could be satellites, the international space station, and weather balloons,” said Steve Luxenberg, president of the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association.
Every Saturday, he and hundreds of others gather in Markham Park with telescopes to look into the starry night sky.
“For the most part, most of the UFOs we see can be explained,” said Les Orosz, treasurer of the South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association.
On social media, there were a tremendous amount of videos out of Homestead, with lights shooting out of the sky.
Turns out, it was the U.S. Army Golden Knights team.
Started in 1959, these folks are seen as the ambassadors of the U.S. Army.
“Not only are your soldiers next to you, but your friends are right next to you, too,” said Morgan George, from the Golden Knights team.
The group stays at the Homestead base during the winter.
Around 2 a.m., they start their practice jumps with flares attached to their feet so they can see each other in the night sky.
“It’s always a common trend that people like to think we’re an invasion, aliens, or a meteor,” said Sgt. Daniel Gerlach with the Golden Knights. “It’s always funny…no one believes us until we show them.”
The Golden Knights will be back April 1-2 for their Wings Over Homestead Air and Space show, click here for more information.
