K-pop star apologizes for wearing swastika days after sporting QAnon tee
Twice singer Chaeyoung made two very poor sartorial choices in the past week and is sorry for at least one of them.
“Hello, this is Chaeyoung from Twice,” she wrote Tuesday. “I didn’t correctly recognize the meaning of the tilted swastika in the T-shirt I wore,” she wrote on Instagram.
The 23-year-old singer was referring to a now-deleted photo on her Instagram, in which she was sporting a shirt featuring Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious wearing a swastika.
“I deeply apologize for not thoroughly reviewing [the shirt], causing concern,” she wrote in the apology, promising that nothing like this will happen again.
However, just days earlier, she was seen performing on the South Korean TV program “Show! Music Core” while wearing a T-shirt that promoted the slogan of the right-wing conspiracy theory collective QAnon —“Where we go one, we go all.”
The group, which is largely supportive of Donald Trump, is known to traffic in anti-Semitic rhetoric, according to the Anti-Defamation League. It’s unclear if Chaeyoung is familiar with QAnon’s ideology or practices.
JYP Entertainment, which formed Twice, took responsibility for Chaeyoung’s outfits and vowed they too would work to prevent their star from wearing offensive clothing.
The Korean pop star, born Son Chae-Young, joined Twice in 2015 after performing in the talent competition show “Sixteen.” Twice is known for songs including “Moonlight Sunrise,” “TT,” and “Cry for Me.”
The all-female nonet kicks-off a North America world tour in June that passes through Metlife Stadium July 6. Their EP “Ready to Be” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart Sunday.
