In May, the World Health Organisation declared Covid-19 was no longer a global health emergency. Those long months of once-unimaginable lockdowns, of quiet streets and frantically busy hospitals, of mandatory masks and enforced separations, might feel like another world, but they’re not. Covid killed at least seven million people worldwide, and while the WHO’s announcement noted that the emergency was over, the pandemic continues.
