Rodgers said it checked off an item on his bucket list. He also said a bit more on Sunday on Instagram. Rodgers put a goat emoji next to the hashtag “novaxdjokovic” and also put a line through a photo of the logo for Moderna, one of the companies that manufactures COVID-19 vaccines.
Rodgers has expressed skepticism about the vaccines and did not receive a vaccine during the pandemic.
Djokovic had not participated in the two previous U.S. Opens because of his vaccination status.
“The reason why I was not here for two years, I have zero regret on that. I’m just glad to be back,” Djokovic told CNN in August. “I’ve had plenty of success on American soil with Indian Wells, Miami, obviously Canada and here, (I’ve) won many times at these Masters 1000 events, all of them. Of course, the U.S. Open as well being the pinnacle of the hard-court season. I’m just excited.”
