David DePape was monitoring his own case from jail when he called a television reporter offering a live statement.
Police bodycam footage released earlier that day — shown in the video above — captured the moment DePape attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband with a hammer, leaving him close to death in the hallway of his San Francisco home.
Yet rather than ask for forgiveness for his crimes, in a stilted voice DePape, 44, expressed regret that he had not done more. “I have an important message for everyone in America: You’re welcome,” he said. “The tree of liberty needs watering. I’m so sorry I didn’t get more of them.”
