Are you smarter than a ‘Flat Earther?’ New reality show pits believers against experts
UNDATED (WKRC) – “Flat Earthers” is a new reality show that asks conspiracy theorists to prove their beliefs to a panel of expert scientists.
“Flat Earthers” will follow five families who wholeheartedly believe the Earth is flat. The show, described as a docuseries and a competition show, will follow the families as they attempt to convince a panel of experts (including scientists, theologians, and cartographers) that the Earth is flat.
They aren’t left to their own devices, however, as each family will receive $50,000 to aid in their research and experimentation to prove the planet’s flatness. According to the showrunners, if a family successfully convinces a majority of the panelists that the Earth is flat, they will win a cash prize. The exact dollar amount has not yet been determined.
The task of convincing scientists to believe one of the most scientifically disproved conspiracy theories will be a Herculean task, so most audiences don’t seem to be expecting a winner. Rather, the show’s entertainment value comes from watching the families work through their beliefs and shining a spotlight on the growing community of genuine conspiracy theorists in the United States.
IndieWire reported that The Network, a new independent streaming service, is currently producing the show and hopes to release the entire 10 episode season in December.
“As we continue to delivery audiences free, premium content we are excited to announce this daring and genre breaking docu-series,” said Aram Rappaport, creator of The Network. “The Flat Earth phenomenon continues to grow on a global level. ‘Flat Earthers’ will provide a fascinating view into the psyche of the human condition and what drives belief systems worldwide.”
The Network is a new streaming service that launched on April 30 with the unique appeal of being free, making money on ads instead of monthly subscriptions. Additionally, The Network stands out with its decision to only release two new shows at a time, with new episodes of dramas releasing on Tuesdays and new episodes of comedies releasing on Thursdays. The platform’s idea is that most households are only consuming two pieces of content at a time. Currently the platform boasts two shows: John Leguizamo’s “The Green Veil” and “Chivalry,” created by and starring Steve Coogan and Sarah Solemani.
