‘You’re insane. That’s insanity stuff’: Kyrgios’ conspiracy theory over Egypt pyramids

Nick Kyrgios has had a long while off tennis courts and it seems some of his spare time has been used looking into conspiracy theories.

The 29-year-old has played just one ATP Tour match in two seasons, a loss in Stuttgart in June last year, as he dealt with wrist and knee injuries.

He has pledged to make a return at January’s Australian Open, but before then he has expressed his belief in one of the human race’s biggest conspiracy theories.

The moon landing, the “flat Earth” theory and the assassination of John F Kennedy are among the world events that receive the most doubt from certain sections of society.

Another revolves around who built one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the three gigantic Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

According to Kyrgios, the 4500-year-old structures couldn’t possibly have been built by humans, as he told journalist and documentarian Louis Theroux on the latest episode of his podcast.

“That’s insanity,” Kyrgios said. “How is that possible they got every measurement correct and they’re all aligned and they did it with rolling large stones on logs? It is an insane statement.

“Why are the doors so big? Like, who needs to walk through the doors if they’re that big?

“I don’t know who it was. I just don’t think that we were capable.

“It’s 2024 and we can’t even all get along and you think that we built the pyramids? You’re insane. That’s insanity stuff.”

The Canberran wasn’t done there, also voicing his doubts about the moon landing and the Earth being a sphere in an entertaining chat.

Perhaps fearing where he could take the conversation, Kyrgios said: “Maybe we need to have a beer and have this off the record.”

While Kyrgios is undeniably an interesting character off the court, trying his hand at a number of pursuits during his long lay-off, fans are still desperate to see him back out there with a racquet in his hand.

A number of mooted comebacks have failed to materialise, but after an Australian Open return was floated by tournament boss Craig Tiley, Kyrgios then confirmed that plan earlier this month.

Speaking on a panel at SXSW Sydney on Thursday, Kyrgios said: “I will be playing the Australia Open this summer.

“I just miss being out there, playing in front of a home crowd.

“We’ve got such a crowd of guys at the moment at the moment like Alex de Minaur playing amazing tennis.”

Despite such a long time away from the sport, during the emergence of enormous talents like Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, Kyrgios is confident he can still compete for a grand slam title.

“I am coming back because something is keeping me around the game,” he said.

“I have beaten pretty much every person that has been put in front of me, made a final of a grand slam, won a doubles title in a grand slam, won multiple titles and made money.

“But I think the one thing that is now on my target is a grand slam.

“I think that will be the only thing that will shut people up.

“That will be my deep motivation.”
