No, Ballot Photo Doesn’t Show Canadian Citizen Voted for Trump in 2024 US Elections

Claim:

A photo authentically shows a ballot submitted by a Canadian citizen who voted for former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2024.

Context

The same photo shared in viral posts in late October 2024 had been posted two weeks earlier by an X user who made no claim of being a Canadian citizen.

A rumor circulating online in late October 2024 claimed that a photo showed a ballot cast by a Canadian citizen for former U.S. President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.

On Oct. 28, 2024, X user @wizardofsoho posted the picture with the caption (archived), “I am Canadian but USA doesn’t require voter ID, so figured I would drive across the border and vote. Kind regards.”

However, this rumor was not true. In subsequent posts on X, @wizardofsoho posted (archived), “This has gone viral lol.” As of this writing, the post had received more than 242,000 likes and 10.9 million views.

One user responded to the post (archived), writing, “That’s not funny at all. I hope you understand the horrible outcome consequences, when you intentionally spread fakes and disinformation, fooling millions of people and disrupting trust in the elections. Be proud of yourself!” Other users posted similar thoughts.

Additionally, another user on X showing the handle @Loopifyyy posted that @wizardofsoho had taken their idea for a similar joke or prank (archived). Hours before @wizardofsoho’s post, @Loopifyyy had shared the same picture of the ballot with the caption (archived), “Came on holiday to the US and they didn’t require voter ID so just voted on a bunch of ballots.”

Other users also later reposted the same photo of the ballot with the captions first shared by @wizardofsoho and @Loopifyyy, as a continuation of the same joke or prank.

Around two weeks before @wizardofsoho and @Loopifyyy created their posts, on Oct. 14, a Reddit user posted the same photo of the ballot on three different subreddits. One day earlier, an X user posted the picture (archived). That X user replied to @wizardofsoho to claim the ballot as her own (archived). Those earlier posts featured no mention of a noncitizen casting the ballot.

Snopes has previously covered Trump’s claims of large numbers of noncitizens voting in U.S. elections. According to USA.gov, people residing in the U.S. as noncitizens are not eligible to vote in federal, state and most local elections. The Associated Press reported that voting by noncitizens is rare, and that “federal law requires states to regularly maintain their voter rolls and remove anyone who is ineligible.” Further, The New York Times published data from studies showing noncitizen voting is “essentially nonexistent” in U.S. federal elections.
