Trump Names Peter Navarro to Top White House Job: ‘Man Who Was Treated Horribly By the Deep State’
President-elect Donald Trump has named longtime loyalist Peter Navarro as his senior counselor for trade and manufacturing.
During the first Trump White House term, Navarro served as the director of White House National Trade Council. Navarro is a supporter of Trump’s protectionist trade positions and has endorsed his use of tariffs.
Following the 2020 election, Navarro supported Trump’s false claims of election fraud. Navarro became the first former White House official imprisoned for a contempt-of-Congress conviction — serving four months in a federal detention facility in Florida.
“I am pleased to announce that Peter Navarro, a man who was treated horribly by the Deep State, or whatever else you would like to call it, will serve as my Senior Counselor for Trade and Manufacturing,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He added, “During my First Term, few were more effective or tenacious than Peter in enforcing my two sacred rules, Buy American, Hire American. He helped me renegotiate unfair Trade Deals like NAFTA and the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), and moved every one of my Tariff and Trade actions FAST….”
Navarro was sentenced to prison after he was found guilty of two misdemeanor counts of contempt for ignoring a Congressional subpoena to testify before the committee investigating the January 6th Capitol riot.
