Worried about UFOs? List ranks states most likely to survive alien attack. How did Florida do? – The Florida Times-Union

The mysterious object spotted floating soundlessly a few hundred feet over Green Cove Springs on March 22 has not yet been identified, although training announced at the nearby Naval Air Station Jacksonville might have had something to do with it.

But it might have been a UFO. We seem to get a lot, and sightings seem to be picking up.

Florida is second only to California for UFO sightings with 8,623 reports since 1944, according to the National UFO Reporting Center (NUFORC). California has reported about twice that, NUFORC data shows. Maybe aliens like the sun?

There have been 34 sightings reported in Florida just this month, most of them explained as drones, a rocket and possibly a Chinese lantern. An annual report from the Pentagon revealed there were 757 new reports of UFO activity nationwide between May 2023 and June 2024.

But the important question, the real question: is Florida a good place to survive an alien invasion? Should we call Will Smith?

What’s the state most likely to survive an alien invasion?

Researchers at online calculator site GIGAcalculator have run the numbers. They looked at population and population density, the number of UFO sightings, the average duration, how many caves each state had, how much area was covered by forests or water, the available military and law enforcement as well as the number of scientists, engineers and healthcare professionals and number of food and beverage manufacturing companies to produce an Alien Survival Score from 0-10.

The state most likely to survive an alien invasion? Virginia, with a score of 8.06.

“The state has the third most military members with 17 per 1k population,” GIGAcalculator said in an email release. “It is also the ninth most forest-covered state, with 0.63% of the state hidden by forest to take shelter.

“Virginia is known as the ‘Mother of Presidents’ with 8 U.S. presidents born here, providing potential insider knowledge of extraterrestrial life in the event of an invasion,” the email added.

Next was Alabama, with 7.91 out of 10. The Appalachian foothills and mountains helped here, along with the 35 caves providing great hiding spots.

We missed the top five, but the Sunshine State came in 6th for invasion-from-above survivability with a score of 7.55.

None of Florida’s stats were outstanding, but we were pretty strong in all of them with 12 caves, 0.51% of the state’s area covered in forest and 0.19 covered in water. Four out of every thousand people are military and two out of every thousand are law enforcement. We don’t have as many scientists (2 out of every thousand) or engineers (5 per thousand) as many other states, but 27 of every thousand residents are healthcare professionals.

It’s Nevada, with a score of 5.28 out of 10, largely due to its lack of notable places to hide.

Whether Area 51 at Groom Lake in the southern part of the state plays a part in that, we can neither confirm nor deny.

How do I report a UFO sighting?

Anyone can report an unusual light, object or shape in the sky to the National UFO Reporting Center on its website or through its phone hotline, 206-722-3000.

More in U.S.

According to the site, the center deals only with objective sightings and asks that you not report:

  • Starlink satellites: These are usually seen as a line of lights in the sky.

  • Sightings of Venus and Jupiter. “Our Center receives many, many reports of Venus and Jupiter.”

  • Objects in photos not seen with the naked eye. “If you see something in a photo or video you took that you did not see with your naked eye, it’s probably a camera anomaly or artifact such as a lens flare.”
