Sahara Bar & Grill Announces Transition From Seed Oils
Shelby Township, MI — Sahara Bar & Grill, a Shelby Township staple known for its
Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, is transitioning from using seed oils in its kitchen operations. The restaurant now uses extra-virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and beef tallow in place of traditional seed oils—a change driven by Sahara’s long-standing commitment to clean, high-quality ingredients and guest wellness.
“We made the decision to move away from seed oils because we’re committed to using cleaner, more natural ingredients. Seed oils are heavily processed and often contain additives or undergo chemical treatments,” said Chris Touma, owner of Sahara Bar & Grill. “Transparency and integrity matter, and moving away from seed oils is just one of the ways we’re staying true to our mission of clean, thoughtful, and delicious food.”
Sahara, a popular Mediterranean restaurant serving Shelby Township, Sterling Heights, Clinton Township, Macomb Township, and the surrounding areas, has built its reputation on serving authentic cuisine with a focus on ingredient integrity. Long committed to clean, high-quality cooking, the restaurant’s latest move to reduce its reliance on seed oils stands out in an industry where their use remains standard.
Health concerns around seed oils have grown in recent years, particularly those high in
omega-6 fatty acids like soybean and corn oil, which some research suggests may contribute to inflammation and other long-term health issues. As more consumers prioritize transparency and whole-food nutrition, Sahara’s move reflects a broader shift toward ingredient-conscious dining.
The culinary impact has been immediately noticeable. “Seed oils can leave a greasy residue
and sometimes a neutral or off-putting aftertaste,” shared Touma. “Since switching to extra
virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and beef tallow, we’ve noticed our food tastes cleaner, fresher, and more flavorful — and our guests have noticed, too.”
Beef tallow, a traditional cooking fat with centuries of culinary history, brings particular benefits to Sahara’s kitchen. “Beef tallow has a rich history of use in traditional cooking and offers a clean, natural fat source with a high smoke point,” noted Touma. “The flavor it imparts is deep and savory, and it’s incredibly stable at high heat.”
While high-quality tallow is more expensive and harder to source, Sahara believes the
investment is worth it. “The only real disadvantage is cost and sourcing — it’s more expensive and harder to find high-quality options, but we believe it’s worth it,” continued Touma.
Guests can experience the difference these premium cooking fats make across Sahara’s entire menu, where each dish now delivers a more pronounced depth of flavor and authentic taste. “Consumers are becoming more educated and aware of what’s going into their food,” added Touma. “Transparency and integrity matter, and moving away from seed oils is just one of the ways we’re staying true to our mission of clean, thoughtful, and delicious food.”
In addition to its dine-in and takeout services, Sahara offers full-service catering for events of all sizes, from intimate gatherings to large celebrations. The same commitment to quality ingredients extends to its catering menu, which can be customized to accommodate various dietary preferences and requirements.
