Doctored photo amplifies trans conspiracy theory targeting Michelle Obama

Claim:

A photograph authentically shows a masculine-looking Michelle Obama posing next to Barack Obama.

In July 2025, a photo circulated on social media ostensibly showing former first lady Michelle Obama standing alongside former U.S. President Barack Obama in their younger years. Noting her somewhat masculine facial features in the image, some posts blatantly posed the question, “Is Michelle Obama a man?”

One X post featuring the image was shared more than 10,000 times.

However, evidence shows the photo of the Obamas as younger people was manipulated to alter Michelle Obama’s appearance. We found a copy of the original, in which the former first lady looks significantly different. As such, we rate the viral version as fake.

The original, unmanipulated photograph was shared by Barack Obama’s official X account in 2019, in a post wishing his wife a happy birthday. Comparing the two versions, it’s easy to see that some of Michelle Obama’s features, including her eyes and hair, had been darkened and shadows around her face and neck were edited to make her appear more masculine.

This was not the first time Michelle Obama was the subject of rumors around her gender identity. We  previously fact-checked video footage and photographs edited to falsely claim the first lady was actually a man or a trans woman

As we’ve reported previously, gender and sexuality scholars say the conspiracy theory about Michelle Obama being a trans woman has thrived for more than a decade and is rooted in racism, transphobia and misogyny, as well as some Americans’ views on how a first lady should embody race, class and gender norms.

The rumors have existed on the internet since at least 2008 and were exacerbated by celebrities, media provocateurs and even some conservative politicians.

Aria Halliday, an associate professor of gender and women’s studies at the University of Kentucky, told Snopes in our previous reporting that misgendering Michelle Obama as an unadmitted trans woman or snidely referring to her as “Michael” indicates how adherents to this conspiracy theory feel about Black, trans women in general. “They are able to tie all of their feelings about trans women; all of their feelings about Michelle Obama; all of their feelings about white people […] being replaced in the world — they get to do all of that stuff in one place,” she said. “And Michelle Obama, because of her position as first lady, kind of sits at the crux of all of those conversations at the same time.”
