Flat Earth

Flat-earthers travel to Antarctica to prove the Earth is flat until the sky exposed a reality they couldn’t explain

An unusual journey to Antarctica has challenged one of the internet’s most persistent conspiracy theories. A group of self-identified flat Earth believers traveled to the continent in December to observe a phenomenon that directly contradicts their core beliefs: the Antarctic midnight Sun.

The trip was part of a project called The Final Experiment, which brought together four flat Earthers and four globe Earth supporters. Their destination was Union Glacier, a remote outpost deep in Antarctica. Organized by Colorado pastor Will Duffy, the expedition aimed to resolve ongoing debate around the shape of the Earth by offering direct observation in one of the least accessible places on the planet.

Flat Earth models claim that Antarctica is not a continent at all, but a massive ice wall that surrounds the world’s oceans. Within this framework, the Sun cannot remain visible for 24 hours during southern summer. On a rotating, tilted sphere, however, the midnight Sun is a regular and measurable occurrence.

Antarctica’s Sun Doesn’t Set in Summer

On December 14, 2024, Duffy and the other participants landed at Union Glacier with the help of Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions. Their plan was simple: observe and record the Sun’s movement in real time. The result matched what scientists have documented for decades. The Sun stayed visible, completing a slow horizontal arc over the ice sheet without setting.

One participant, Jeran Campanella, admitted in a post-trip video that the observation surprised him. “I thought there was no 24-hour sun. In fact, I was pretty sure of it,” he said. “I honestly now believe there is.”

The midnight Sun can only occur due to Earth’s axial tilt, which causes continuous daylight in polar regions during their respective summers. As explained by NASA, this tilt means parts of Antarctica are tilted toward the Sun for extended periods, allowing the Sun to circle the sky without dipping below the horizon. The observation directly contradicted common flat Earth explanations based on the azimuthal equidistant map, which Campanella said he could no longer rely on.

Exposing Gaps in Flat Earth Claims

For years, some flat Earth communities have argued that the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 blocks public access to the continent, fueling speculation about what really lies there. Duffy decided to challenge that belief directly. By organizing a public expedition and documenting the experience, he hoped to strip away one of the last remaining shields behind which the theory often hides.

In a press release prior to the trip, Duffy said, “I created The Final Experiment to end this debate, once and for all.” His goal was to shift the conversation from speculation to verifiable observation.

Each participant paid over $31,000 to join the expedition, not including gear and preparation. The stakes were personal and ideological. Despite clear evidence of the Sun remaining visible, not all flat Earth participants interpreted the experience as definitive.

Austin Whitsitt, another prominent flat Earth content creator, acknowledged the observation but suggested alternative interpretations might exist. He mentioned seeing a demonstration that could explain the 24-hour daylight, though he did not offer further detail.

This response reflects what researchers have observed about belief systems. A study from the National Institutes of Health found that beliefs tied to personal identity tend to resist change, even when faced with direct evidence. For some, experience is not enough to overturn long-held frameworks.

Science Meets Resistance

The science of Earth’s shape has been settled for centuries. Ancient Greek astronomers used shadow measurements and horizon curvature to prove the Earth’s roundness. What’s new is how that science is being contested in the age of viral videos and algorithm-driven misinformation.

Duffy’s team filmed the entire observation. The footage is expected to be released publicly in early 2025. He believes the visual record will speak for itself, especially as it shows something that contradicts one of the central claims of flat Earth theory.

Flat Earth content continues to thrive on social media platforms, where skepticism of institutions often fuels interest. But the sight of the midnight Sun, filmed and acknowledged by flat Earthers themselves, creates a challenge that is harder to dismiss.
