Charlotte Independence owner selling stake after COVID-19 conspiracy tweets – The Athletic
Charlotte Independence majority owner Dan DiMicco is selling his stake in the club, the United Soccer League announced Monday.
DiMicco, who served as trade adviser to Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign, has been criticized for regularly tweeting conspiracy theories about the origin of COVID-19 in China.
“The day-to-day management of the club — of which Mr. DiMicco and others are not directly involved — will continue to be overseen by President and Managing Partner Jim McPhilliamy,” the USL said in a statement. “As such, the Club remains fully committed to all players, staff and community members as we move forward with the 2021 season and beyond.”
