Anti-vax protester in Canberra is arrested during protest convoy

A police officer smashed the window of a ‘freedom convoy‘ driver after the truckie refused to follow directions.

Twitter account @KenBehren shared a video on Tuesday that showed a large group of protesters in Canberra making their way down Commonwealth Avenue before being stopped by police.

The video shows the truck driver inching his vehicle towards police officers who were standing in its way.

The incident then comes to a head when the driver makes a larger advance towards an officer.

Another policeman can then be seen to approach the truck and smash the driver’s side window with a large baton.

Immediately afterwards protesters began to swarm around the truck as the officer unlocked the truckie’s door and handcuffed him.

Convoy to Canberra protesters had planned a large anti-vaccine mandate demonstration to take place the same day as the Federal Budget was announced, however the event failed to attract large numbers.

Demonstration turnouts peaked in early February when they reached up to 20,000.

ACT Chief Police Officer Neil Gaughan warned locals last Friday to avoid the ‘annoying’ demonstrations and revealed the cost of police management had reached almost $2.5million.

‘I think Canberra is mature enough to know that the worst thing they can do is agitate this group,’ he said.

‘I ask Canberrans to – as they have been basically since December – shy away from them, give them a bit of a distance, let them rant and rave and do what they’re doing.

“Hopefully by Tuesday night they’ll have left.’

‘What are you doing?,’ protesters yelled. ‘That’s illegal! He is not resisting.’

The protesters then began to yelled that the officers were ‘attacking them’.

The arrest follows an incident last Wednesday where a group of ‘freedom fighters’ harassed a bus driver.

The demonstrators were blocking Northbourne Avenue in the city’s centre at about 11.45am on Tuesday when the bus slowly approached.

Protesters said the bus driver was trying to run them over and began banging the bus windows and swearing while one man wrestled the driver for the vehicle’s keys from the ignition.

The group of about 100 continued to barrage the bus until a leader yelled out to continue marching towards Parliament House.
