Fact Check: Dual-Use COVID-19/Influenza A&B Test Does NOT Prove Coronavirus Is Flu
Does a dual-use COVID-19/influenza A&B test prove coronavirus is the flu? No, that’s not true: While COVID and influenza are both respiratory ailments, they are caused by different viruses and require different tests. The antigen test kit pictured in this story is marketed in Australia under the name Fanttest. It’s a combination self-test that checks for both viruses at the same time. The two tests are separate from each other but are included in the same testing device.
The claim appeared in an Instagram post on November 28, 2022. It opened:
A couple years ago, I was attacked on social media for saying the Rona was the flu. In 2019, flu numbers ‘disappeared’ and everyone had rona instead. Now, the test is for both? 🤷🏽♀️ I always knew I was right. All a scam. Fuck all of you who were assholes to me for what I believed. Keep living in fear. I’ll just keep living.

Two different viruses
Although one test kit is used, each Fanttest COVID-19/Influenza A&B Antigen Test Kit is made up of two separate tests. This is because the virus that causes each illness is not the same and requires a different test to identify it. This is what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website says:
Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) first identified in 2019. Flu is caused by infection with a flu virus (influenza viruses).
