White House: Full Review of JFK Assassination Documents Completed, with 99% Now Publicly Accessible – National Archives

National Archives Releases 99% of JFK Assassination Documents

The National Archives and Records Administration has concluded its review of the classified documents in the 1963 assassination of former President John F. Kennedy and made 99% of the material available for public consumption. This announcement was made by the White House in a memo released by President Biden. The review was completed in May, and the remaining documents authorized for declassification have been released to the public.

The Warren Commission’s report on Kennedy’s assassination was initially sealed until 2039. However, in 1992, Congress passed the JFK Records Act, which directed the National Archives and Records Administration to create a collection of documents related to the assassination. This law required all assassination records to be released by 2017.

Former Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden postponed the disclosures of these documents on multiple occasions, citing advice from intelligence agencies such as the FBI and CIA. During his administration, Trump released tens of thousands of documents, but most of them included redactions.

Under the Biden administration, more than 14,000 documents related to Kennedy’s assassination were released in December. Following this, President Biden ordered a six-month review of the remaining records. Since then, more than 2,600 documents have been released, including 1,103 that were made public on Tuesday.

The National Archives worked with other agencies to review redactions in 3,648 documents. Between April and June of 2023, the National Archives posted 2,672 documents containing newly released information. In December, the administration ordered the release of nearly 13,000 documents on the attack, and an additional 1,500 documents were released 12 months prior.

The Biden administration’s release of these documents is part of their commitment to government transparency. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that the president’s memo on the newest batch of documents reflects his instruction that all information related to President Kennedy’s assassination should be released, except when strongly justified otherwise. Over 99% of the records in the collection are now publicly available at the National Archives, and plans are in place to digitize the entire collection for easier public access.

The assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963, has sparked numerous conspiracy theories and public speculation about the attack and events leading up to it. There have been accusations of the federal government trying to keep its findings secret. President Biden’s memo recommends continued use of agencies’ transparency plans to release information covered by the JFK Records Act, while also protecting against identifiable harms.

Kennedy was assassinated by U.S. Marine Corps veteran Lee Harvey Oswald while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas. Oswald himself was shot and killed two days later by a nightclub operator as he was being transferred from Dallas Police Headquarters to an armored car.
