Letter: Trump never provided evidence of election fraud

Jan. 6, 2021, three years ago, two significant events were unfolding. As the U.S. House was preparing to certify the 2020 presidential election results, President Trump was actively speaking at a “Stop the Steal” rally. He had long claimed that a 2020 loss would signify a rigged election and had previously urged the Proud Boys to stand by. Convinced by Trump that the election was stolen, his supporters marched to the Capitol to “fight like hell.”
The rioters overwhelmed police and broke into the Capitol to halt the certification. For hours, Trump watched on TV without intervening, despite pleas to his chief of staff from figures like Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity and Donald Trump Jr.
Initially, Republican leaders like Ted Cruz and Lindsey Graham criticized Trump’s role in the attack. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell explicitly blamed Trump. McConnell stated, “January 6th was a disgrace … President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.”

In the Senate trial, 57 senators, including seven Republicans, found Trump guilty of “incitement of insurrection,” falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict.
Trump described the event as “unfortunate,” expressing sympathy for the rioters and hinting at pardons. Despite the impeachment and the chaos of Jan. 6, Trump continues to influence the GOP and falsely assert election fraud, yet he never provided the promised evidence of election fraud.
