Chinese Experts Publish Paper Citing Development of ‘100 Percent Mortality’ Virus in Mice

A paper published by a research team affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party provoked international outcry causing a revision of certain terms in the paper.

Health Viewpoints

A research team affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) military published a paper earlier this month, revealing a coronavirus with a 100 percent mortality rate in mice and a spillover risk into humans, sparking international outcry. Subsequently, the team revised the paper, removing words such as “lethal.”

American virology expert Sean Lin, who holds a doctorate in microbiology analyzed the situation on the “Health 1+1” program, suggesting that the discovery of the virus in the paper was not accidental but possibly part of a deliberate effort by the CCP to encourage scientists to screen for more dangerous viruses as potential sources for biochemical weapons.

The research was published in early January on the preprint website bioRxiv. The paper indicated that prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chinese researchers had discovered two coronaviruses related to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Malayan pangolins, named GD/2019 and GX/2017. The isolates, denoted as pCoV-GD01 and GX_P2V, were cultured separately.

The research team previously used the GX_P2V virus for cell cultivation, creating a variant strain named GX_P2V (short_3UTR). Subsequently, they cloned a new variant called GX_P2V C7.

The researchers intranasally infected four transgenic mice with this new variant strain. These mice possess human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), which acts as a receptor for coronavirus entry into cells. In other words, the transgenic mice can contract the virus capable of human transmission. Shockingly, all mice infected with this virus succumbed within seven to eight days, resulting in a 100 percent mortality rate.

In the days leading up to death, the mice exhibited rapid weight loss, piloerection (goosebumps), hunched posture, and sluggish movements. Before succumbing, their eyes turned completely white.

Subsequently, researchers employed the aforementioned infection method to inoculate eight hACE2-transgenic mice. On the third and sixth days post-infection, four mice were dissected each day. Significant amounts of viral RNA were detected in various organs, including the brain, lungs, turbinate, trachea, and eyes. By the sixth day post-infection, exceptionally high viral RNA loads were observed in brain tissue samples, suggesting that the mechanism of viral lethality may be associated with brain infection.

The preprint of the research paper raised concerns within the academic community after its release on Jan. 4. Francois Balloux, the director of the UCL Genetics Institute, criticized on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “It’s a terrible study, scientifically totally pointless. I can see nothing of vague interest that could be learned from force-infecting a weird breed of humanised mice with a random virus. ”
Dr. Gennadi Glinsky, a retired medical professor from Stanford University, also wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This madness must be stopped before too late.”
Under public pressure, the researchers updated the paper on Jan. 21, removing phrases such as “lethal infection,” “100 percent mortality,” and “spillover risk into humans.”

Experts: Product of Military-Civil Fusion

Mr. Lin, former director of the Virus Department at the U.S. Army Research Institute, expressed on the “Health 1+1” program that these word changes are a rather irresponsible and misleading practice—people who are unaware of the original version of the paper might perceive it as just a common animal virus, not posing a threat to humans. Nonetheless, according to Mr. Lin, removing the term “lethal” does not alter the fact that researchers created a potentially dangerous virus.

Mr. Lin emphasized that this research is a product of “military-civil fusion,” with several authors of the paper having backgrounds in the Chinese Communist Party’s military. He believes that the research team did not stumble upon a lethal virus accidentally but intentionally screened for viruses with the greatest potential harm to humans. Mr. Lin even suggested that behind this lies encouragement and financial support from the CCP’s military.

Lihua Song, the corresponding author of the preprint, is a professor at the College of Life Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and a member of the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering at the same university. Mr. Song earned his doctorate in military preventive medicine from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, which is affiliated with the CCP’s military. Subsequently, he served as an associate researcher at the Institute of Microbiology and Epidemiology of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences. Additionally, two authors of the preprint are affiliated with the Fifth Medical Center of the General Hospital of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, and the animal experiments were approved by the committee of this center.

High-Risk Research Encouraged by Institutions

Mr. Lin pointed out that on the website of the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Soft Matter Science and Engineering at Beijing University of Chemical Technology, to which the corresponding author of the paper is affiliated, there is a public statement emphasizing innovation, particularly encouraging “high-risk research.” He explained that “soft matter” includes biological tissues, and the institution’s research focus is on engineering soft matter with the aim of large-scale production. In this context, the institution’s explicit encouragement of high-risk research is truly unsettling.

In response to the international criticism labeling the actions of CCP experts as reckless and playing with fire, Mr. Lin stated, “I believe that the international community is underestimating the severity of the entire situation. It is not just playing with fire; it involves the development of biochemical weapons. The ultimate goal is to research more lethal viruses, then present them as potential sources of bioweapons for the military. This enables the team to secure additional funding from the military and bolster their publication records. The entire system operates on a very sinister mechanism.”

Mr. Lin further explained that scientists raised in mainland China are extensively indoctrinated by the Chinese Communist Party, often lacking faith and moral constraints. As long as they can secure research funding, they may overlook the potential harm to humanity. Moreover, they might perceive their work as contributing to the country’s development of new weapons to gain strategic advantage in warfare.

He also urged the international community to recognize and put a stop to the wrongdoing of the CCP, stating, “If such an evil mechanism is not acknowledged and halted by the international community, it will persist. Such wrongdoing should not be repeated time and time again.”
