Image for article titled While Black Folks Need to Stop Saying Trump's Most Recent Assassination Attempt Was Staged, We're Skeptical About Everything For a Reason

The only normal thing about the 2024 presidential election cycle is that nothing is normal. I mean you’ve got one Democratic presidential candidate dropping out, another coming in and MAGA extremists embracing a phony story conjured by white supremacists about immigrants eating pets.

But the weirdest thing is that people keep trying to kill Donald Trump. First a strange young man takes a shot at Trump, reportedly coming a few centimeters from his target, but managing to kill another man. Now, we have yet another reported attempt on Trump’s life — this time an apparent middle aged man named Ryan Wesley Routh pointing an AK-47 through a fence while the former president is playing golf.

From Jump Street, there were conspiracy theories floating around the Black social media universe about the first attempt — “Insecure star Amanda Seales said the attempt was staged in a since-deleted social media video, which caught her a royal dragging. Comedian D.L. Hughley also called BS in an Instagram post, calling the attempt “scripted.”

Many Black folks believe Trump’s camp has been staging these incidents to garner support from his base. And to be honest, that supposedly “iconic” fist pump from the first attempt seemed like a poster-perfect . So I understand that people are suspicious, but I’ve got no evidence to support the claim that he’s staged anything. I’m no investigator, so all I can do is speculate from my laptop.

That said, it’s not like this country hasn’t given Black people reason to be suspicious. There have been very real insidious plans made by some nefarious people that had nothing to do with theory – they were real conspiracies!

If you take it back 90 years, scientists with what was the United States Public Health Service created an entire program to allow men afflicted with syphilis to remain untreated. It was a grotesque and immoral experiment that we now know as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, and it lasted until the whistle was blown on it in 1972.

In 1956, the U.S. government included Civil Rights and human rights groups, including the Black Panthers in its COINTELPRO list in order to neutralize them. Among those targeted were Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and many others.

Donald Trump lies so much it’s hard to know what to believe when it comes to him and I wouldn’t put it past him to join in the conspiring if he goes back to the White House..But your best bet is to go with legitimate sources when it comes to what you see in media, listen to authorities who actually know what they are talking about, and read full articles to get the context.

Finally, let’s pray there are no more assassination attempts on anyone. Things are already weird and violent enough. It’s unclear how much more we can take.
