No, Biden Didn’t Announce 2028 US Presidential Run Hours After 2024 Election

Claim:

U.S. President Joe Biden announced a 2028 reelection campaign on the day following former President Donald Trump’s 2024 projected reelection victory.

Hours following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s projected reelection victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, a rumor circulated on X in the form of a trending headline under the platform’s “beta” tab labeled “explore.” That headline — generated by the Grok artificial-intelligence (AI) platform — read, “Biden Announces 2028 Presidential Run.” The headline appeared next to other bits of purported election-related news.

When selected, the trend displayed a page (archived) showing several posts under the same headline. For example, on Nov. 6, 2024, the most popular post shown at the top of the trend’s list read (archived), “Breaking: Biden announced that he will run again in 2028.” As of this writing, the post displayed around 150,000 views.

One user replying to the post asked (archived), “Wait is this real?!?” Another person also wondered (archived), “Is this real?” As a third example of people unsure of the post, a user asked (archived), “Is this parody?”

However, despite the flashy headline and popular post, this rumor was both false and a joke. Further, a small disclaimer displayed under the trend’s headline of “Biden Announces 2028 Presidential Run.” That disclaimer said of the AI tool, “Grok can make mistakes, verify its outputs.”

We reached out to the White House for comment about the false rumor but did not yet receive a response.

We previously reported about another time the Grok AI tool created a somewhat misleading headline about Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and his son, Gus. We also provided live updates during Election Day.
