Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) accused Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) of “peddling conspiracy theories” on Tuesday after Johnson called for hearings on the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to investigate whether they were “covered up.”

After Johnson suggested on a podcast that Building 7 may have been brought down by a “controlled demolition,” and that there was “an awful lot being covered up in terms of what the American government knows about 9/11,” Lawler called out his Republican colleague on social media.

“Respectfully, Senator Johnson should stop peddling conspiracy theories about the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history and one that forever altered the lives of so many of my fellow New Yorkers,” wrote Lawler. “Crap like this dishonors and disrespects the innocent lives lost, our brave first responders, and all families and survivors who still carry the pain of 9/11 each and every day.”

During an appearance on Republican commentator Benny Johnson’s podcast this week, Johnson said, “You listen to the documentary ‘Bravo 7’, there’s an awful lot of questions. You know, who ordered the removal and then destruction of all that evidence? Totally contrary to any other firefighting investigation procedures. I mean, who ordered that? Who’s in charge?”

He continued, “There are a host of questions that I will be asking, honestly, now that my eyes have been opened up,” before adding, “So hopefully now with this administration, I think President Trump should have some interest, being a New Yorker himself, what actually happened on 9/11. What do we know? What is being covered up? My guess is there is an awful lot being covered up in terms of what the American government knows about 9/11.”
