There’s an old joke that neatly encapsulates humanity’s ability to cling on to fervent conviction in the face of irrefutable evidence: a JFK conspiracy theorist dies and goes to heaven. When he’s greeted by God, he’s told that he can ask one question which the Almighty will answer truthfully. Without hesitation, the conspiracy theorist asks: “Who really shot Kennedy?” God replies that it was Lee Harvey Oswald, and that he acted alone. Stumped, the conspiracy theorist pauses, then says: “Wow! This goes higher up than I thought.”
The gag pops up every so often on social media: on the anniversary of Kennedy’s assassination; the Trump 2.0 release of the JFK files. But these days there’s another pop culture catchphrase to contend with: “Jeffrey Epstein didn’t kill himself.”
