Charlie Kirk shooting suspect an unaffiliated voter, not a registered Republican

Claim:

Tyler Robinson, the suspect arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was a registered Republican.

Context

Similar claims on social media alleged Robinson came from a “Republican household.” While Robinson did not announce a party affiliation when registering to vote, Robinson’s parents did register as Republicans.

After law enforcement arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Sept. 12, 2025, rumors swirled online that the suspect was registered as a Republican voter.

The claim spread on X, Facebook and Bluesky

However, Robinson was not registered as a Republican. In fact, he did not declare a party affiliation when he registered to vote in Utah on July 13, 2021, according to a state voter registration lookup using identifying details from a probable-cause affidavit. (Snopes has redacted the address for his family’s privacy.)

Therefore, we rate this claim false.

It is worth noting that some popular posts claimed, instead, that Robinson “grew up in a Republican household.” His parents were, in fact, registered as Republicans, according to their voter registration records.

Here’s a screenshot of Robinson’s voter details, with personal information redacted:

(Utah Lieutenant Governor’s Office)

As shown above, Robinson’s records stated that he had not voted in two regular general elections. Snopes also requested additional voter registration records from the Utah lieutenant governor’s office, which handles elections in the state, and will update this story if we receive them.

Snopes also has debunked a claim that Robinson donated to Trump in 2020.
