Trump Atop Worst Censorship of 2024: Election Interference and Beyond

Big Tech aimed for a Silent Night all year long as it silenced users’ free speech. While Americans voted for their political leaders, Big Tech platforms took every opportunity to vote for censorship.

Election-interfering censorship was front and center ahead of the 2024 election, particularly targeting Republican presidential nominee and ultimate victor Donald Trump and his campaign. Google was especially blatant in its election search manipulation. Facebook turned into the Grinch when a church posted an announcement of its Nativity play, and the platform also pulled the trigger on content by a firearms manufacturer. An Israeli news outlet and other groups and individuals condemning Islamic terrorism found themselves in Big Tech’s crosshairs, as did individuals challenging leftist dogma on transgenderism, contraceptives and abortion.

Below are the worst censorship cases of 2024, pulled from MRC Free Speech America’s exclusive CensorTrack database.

1) Meta, Amazon and Google suppressed information on stunning assassination attempt on the GOP presidential nominee. After a man shot Donald Trump and killed rally attendee Corey Comperatore in July, Meta and Google actively suppressed and censored images and information about the shattering event. Meta-owned Instagram and Facebook imposed fact-check interstitials on a genuine and now iconic image of Trump with his fist raised in the air after being shot. But Google also suppressed search suggestions for the assassination attempt on Trump, as The Daily Mail uncovered. Then, mere hours after the second assassination attempt on Trump, Google blocked its AI chatbot Gemini from responding to a question about the attempt. Even more egregious, Amazon’s Alexa denied the fact that Trump was shot. Amazon subsequently admitted the error.

2) Google search results presented majority leftist sources on presidential nominees. In each one of MRC’s exclusive six weeklysearches leading up to Trump’s election, when MRC put the search terms “donald trump presidential race 2024” and “kamala harris presidential race 2024” in Google search, Google buried right-leaning news sites in search results, sometimes as much as 20+ pages deep. This tactic produced a steady diet of hostile news sites about Donald Trump to its users. Google continued its search result manipulation on Election Day and afterwards. Indeed, MRC found that Google had also undermined President-elect Trump’s nominees with overwhelmingly leftist news results for five straight weeks.

3) Google, X and service providers censored the 2024 presidential campaigns. Google search suppressed Trump’s campaign website twice in June and then again in July, during the Republican National Convention. Meanwhile, X restricted the Trump War Room account during the first presidential debate between Trump and Joe Biden, and after Kamala Harris became the Democrat presidential candidate, X temporarily blocked users from following her new KamalaHQ account. Finally, over the July 4th weekend, T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T all prevented the Trump campaign from sending out text messages.

4) Facebook: the Grinch that censored Christmas. Grace Fellowship Church posted a Facebook announcement for its children’s Nativity play: “Join us on Sunday, December 15 at 9 or 10:30 AM as our GraceSquad Children’s Ministry presents ‘Straight Outta Bethlehem’, a Christmas story-inspired musical for the entire family!” Screenshots showed that Facebook asserted the post, which it removed, “goes against our Community Standards on spam.” The platform also claimed the post might use “misleading links or content to trick people to visit, or stay on, a website.”  Nor is this the only instance of anti-Christian Big Tech censorship. Radio talk show host Michael Savage said in a live broadcast that YouTube suspended him for a week in September after he shared an old video of him discussing Christmas, the genocide of Christians by Muslims in the Middle East and efforts to help persecuted Christians. YouTube removed it for allegedly being “violent or graphic.”

5) Meta platform took aim at firearms manufacturer. Shortly before Thanksgiving and Black Friday, Facebook suspended gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson, which has been in business since 1852. Smith & Wesson shareda screenshot showing Facebook on Nov. 22 vaguely asserted, “We suspended your Page because some of your activity looks like it doesn’t follow our rules.” The platform further flagged a story and two posts as supposed justification, but later a Meta spokesperson admitted the manufacturer was censored “in error.”

6) Big Tech censored Israeli news and users for reporting on eliminations of terrorists. Facebook suspended Israeli news organization Arutz Sheva based on alleged complaints, which the outlet said may have been antisemitic reporting campaigns. Facebook sent Arutz Sheva complaints with the message “It looks like you shared or sent something that attacks a person, or group of people, based on who they are.” But according to Arutz Sheva, the content on its Facebook page dealt with topics such as an IDF announcement, “the elimination of senior Hezbollah official Nabil Qaouk on September 28th… [and] of the terrorist who murdered a father in front of his children on October 7th,” among other things. Nor is this a one-off. In May, X limited post visibility for two users calling for the destruction of Hamas, including Parents Defending Education President Nicki Neily, who had posted an image showing the five Americans held hostage by Hamas. X Community Notes further fact-checked Donald Trump Jr. when he mocked anti-Israel students who had graffitied “FREE PALASTINE” on a flight of stairs. In May, a TikTok user reported on X that he had commented on a video saying, “Are you holding hamas to any account?” TikTok removed the comment, vaguely claiming a violation, according to screenshots posted by the user.

7) Google accused PragerU of “hate speech” for its documentary warning about radical Islamic jihad. Google banned PragerU from its App Store in June. Google asserted, per screenshots from PragerU, “After a recent review, we found that your app PragerU [redacted] is not compliant with one or more of our Developer Program Policies,” due to “Content or speech asserting that a protected group is inhuman, inferior or worthy of being hated.” The documentary called “Dear Infidels” provided a platform for victims of Islamic terror to tell their stories and expose the horrific reality they suffered. Google again banned PragerU from its App Store on December 20 for alleged “misleading claims.”

8) X censored widow of late Russian dissident. X suspended the account of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s widow in February after she accused Russian President Vladamir Putin of killing her husband. The platform later stated this was done in error and reinstated her account.

9) Big Tech went knives out into the culture wars. Communist Chinese government-tied TikTok, responding to pressure from The Washington Post, deleted content from commentator Brett Cooper and TikTok influencer Nicole Bendayan discussing the harmful side effects of hormonal contraception. In June (Pride Month), TikTok also banned the account for women’s clothing brand XX-XY because it released an ad condemning biological males in women’s sports and urging women to stand against it. Reddit engaged in Pride Month censorship too, as it banned the anti-child-transitioning LGBTQ group Gays Against Groomers (GAG). GAG was again targeted in August, when X limited post visibility for GAG’s post critiquing the drag queen “Last Supper” at the Paris Olympics opening ceremonies. Meta even joined in censoring cultural content. For instance, Facebook fact-checked Family Research Council’s Tony Perkins for correcting ABC presidential debate moderators after they claimed that killing a baby post-birth is not legal in any state. Instagram suspendeddetransitioner and activist Chloe Cole without a specific explanation, though it quickly restored her account.

Desperate Election Interference Giant Google Tries to Forestall Legal Penalties

Google is desperately fighting to stop the federal government from breaking its powerful search engine monopoly, which it has exploited to manipulate elections to benefit leftist candidates.

In August, U.S. District Court Judge Amit P. Mehta ruled that Google‘s payouts to other tech companies to ensure that its search engine is automatically provided to users were illegal and monopolistic. After the Department of Justice asked the judge to force a sale of Google’s Chrome, Google countered with much less dramatic changes in hopes of appeasing the government and the court. The New York Times reported that Google’s attempts to “fend off the government’s sweeping requests” could “set a precedent for a string of other antitrust cases that challenge the dominance of tech behemoths.”

MRC Free Speech America researchers have  repeatedly exposed Google’s blatant search engine manipulation before, during, and after the 2024 election, but Google is now in the midst of an antitrust legal battle that could change that.

Google consistently attempted to give the edge in search first to President Joe Biden, then to his appointed successor, Vice President Kamala Harris. In turn, Google repeatedly suppressed the campaign websites of President-elect Donald Trump and other Republicans while elevating Democrats. In addition, Google also habitually elevated content from leftist outlets denigrating the policy positions of Trump and his vice presidential pick Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), all while burying election content from right-leaning media.

Now that its lucrative election-interfering apparatus is under threat, Google is scrambling to make itself appear like the victim of government overreach. Google has pleaded that the drastic changes would harm consumers, and decried the government for being supposedly “interventionist.”

MRC Vice President for Free Speech Dan Schneider explained, “Conservatives object to using antitrust enforcement against companies simply because they are big, but Google’s repeated and egregious abuses have made it easy for most of us to realize that the law was written to stop this kind of wretched behavior.” He continued: “Google has earned whatever it has coming.”

Google has proposed milquetoast changes to its agreements with other companies that really won’t change the grip it holds over the search engine market, which still hovers around 90 percent These include “multiple default agreements across different platforms (e.g., a different default search engine for iPhones and iPads) and browsing modes, plus the ability to change their default search provider at least every 12 months.” As The Times quipped, “Google said on Friday what it thought should change to address a ruling that it had illegally maintained a monopoly over online search: not much.” [Emphasis added.]

None of this would change Google’s ability to manipulate its search engine to match its political preferences, as MRC research has shown. In fact, even Trump’s sweeping electoral victory wasn’t enough to get Google to stop putting its thumb on the scale. Recently, MRC found Google turning its sights on President-elect Trump’s nominees in searches with overwhelmingly leftist results for five consecutive weeks.

Not A Joke: MSNBC Invites MARC ELIAS To Condemn Pam Bondi as an Election Denier!

What’s next, MSNBC? Will you bring in Michael Avenatti, on a Zoom from his federal prison cell, as your expert on lawyer-client ethics?

The question arises because, of all the 330 million people in the United States, Saturdays’ edition of MSNBC’s The Weekend chose Marc Elias to attack Pam Bondi — Trump’s AG nominee — as a 2020 “election denier,” and someone who had suggested the existence of “fake ballots.”

This is the same Marc Elias who is fresh from his failure to steal the Pennsylvania senatorial election for his client, Democrat Bob Casey. As the National Review described it, “Casey’s strategy — spearheaded by his counsel, Democratic superlawyer Marc Elias — has turned to seeking to count illegal ballots.”

In service of Elias’s larcenous strategy, three counties counted ballots that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court had ruled to be illegal. Democrat Bucks County Commissioner Chair Diane Ellis-Marseglia defiantly boasted:

“We all know that precedent by a court doesn’t matter anymore in this country and people violate laws any time they want. So for me, if I violate this law, it’s because I want a court to pay attention to it.”

Well, Denise, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court did “pay attention” to your flouting of the law. In a unanimous 7-0 decision, the five Democrats and two Republicans on the court ordered, in capital letters, that the election officials: “SHALL COMPLY with the prior rulings of this Court” that the ballots in question were illegal.

Prior to Elias’s comments, the show rolled a 2020 clip of Bondi on Fox News, in an exchange with Steve Doocy, saying she would fight till Trump was declared the winner of Pennsylvania, and suggesting there could have been fake ballots cast there. So the irony and hypocrisy of inviting Elias—of all people—to condemn Bondi as an election denier is compounded by the fact that the very state where he acted to steal an election by relying on illegal ballots was . . . Pennsylvania!

Elias had the chutzpah to declare that, now more than ever, Dems need to speak with “moral clarity.” The Weekend hosts, predictably, were way too diplomatic to mention Elias’s attempt to steal the Pennsylvania election, and his nerve in accusing anyone else of being an election denier relying on fake ballots.

This was not the only bit of stunning hypocrisy during the segment’s attack on Bondi. Co-host Alicia Menendez quoted Stephen Colbert to the effect that Bondi “is the only person to ever make money off Trump University.”

That was a reference to the Trump family foundation having made a $25,000 to Bondi’s campaign for a second term as Florida AG at a time her office was deciding whether to investigate Trump University, something her office ultimately decided not to do.

So Menendez, via Colbert, was unsubtly accusing Bondi of accepting a bribe.

We’ve made a point in our coverage of Alicia Menendez to avoid visiting upon the child the sins of the father. But all bets are off when she goes out of her way to accuse an elected official of bribery. She is the daughter of Democrat Sen. Bob ‘Gold Bars’ Menendez of New Jersey, who in July was convicted of corruption on all 16 counts, including bribery.

Here’s the transcript.

MSNBC
The Weekend
11/23/24
9:18 am ET

MICHAEL STEELE: This is the woman who is going to be the head of our Justice Department. What concerns you with this pick, Marc?

MARC ELIAS: Look, she’s an election denier. Just straight out and out. I Mean, Steve Doocy, of all people, was dubious of her claim of fake ballots. I mean, when you’ve lost Steve Doocy, on right-wing claims, you’ve come a long way.

Not only, not only was the 2020 election fair and free, and the results accurate, but, you know, this notion of fake ballots. That isn’t even something that the, that most of the Trump world was embracing. They were embracing a lot of other cockamamie theories. But the idea of fake ballots in Pennsylvania. That was on the fringe of the fringe.

And so, look, you know, a few weeks ago, it was widely accepted in the mainstream media, in Democratic politics, in the center of American political discourse, that election denialism was disqualifying. You could be a lot of things, but you couldn’t be an avowed election denier. And now, here we have someone who is an avowed election denier being nominated, and in some corners at least being treated as a more acceptable pick simply because she is not a sexual predator under, you know, like the last nominee.

. . .

SYMONE SANDERS: She is an election denier. It should be disqualifying. What — we have just gone to the Twilight Zone, Marc.

ELIAS: We have. And that is the thing that has me most worried.

. . .

Now is the time we all need to stiffen our spines and harden our fortresses around democracy. Now is not the time to capitulate, now is not the time to appease. Now is the time to speak with more moral clarity than we even did before the election.

. . .

ALICIA MENENDEZ: It is telling that there is an an old Stephen Colbert clip where he says that Pam Bondi is the only person to ever make money off Trump University. That, in an ordinary environment, would be the scandal that we would be focused on.

Hostin Calls Bondi an ‘Election Denier,’ But She Denied Trump’s 2016 Win

Oh how quickly folks in the liberal media forget their own misdeeds when it’s time to fling mud at the other side. That hypocrisy was again on full display during the Friday edition of ABC’s The View, when cloudy co-host Sunny Hostin lashed out at U.S. Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi. Hostin called Bondi an “election denier” when Trump was her client in 2020, that’s despite the fact that for six years, Hostin had maintained that President-elect Trump was an “illegitimate president” after his 2016 victory.

“I agree with you, Alyssa [Farah Griffin], [Matt Gaetz] would have been a very dangerous pick for the Department of Justice. But his new pick, Trump’s new pick, Pam Bondi. I believe she’s a dangerous pick, as well,” Hostin proclaimed. “She supported Trump’s false election claims. She was involved the efforts to overturn the results.”

Her evidence? Video of Bondi defending Trump’s candidacy the first two days after the election when many states had not finalized their vote counts. “We are thrilled to have won Pennsylvania with 87 percent of the vote in and we’re up almost 400,000 votes. So we’re thrilled,” Bondi said in a soundbite The View played from November 4, the day after the election. The other soundbite was from November 5.

Anti-Trumper Ana Navarro actually stuck up for Bondi, drawing on their years of friendship and nights at the bar:

I have known Pam Bondi for many, many, many years. I will tell you, I don’t want to ruin her reputation with MAGA people but Pam Bondi and I hung out a lot when she was attorney general of Florida and she would come to Miami. We drank a lot together. I liked her a lot. She’s not a kook. What’s a lite election denialism between friends when at least – Listen, everything in life is relative.

“Election denialism is a very big deal, Ana,” Hostin chided.

And that’s where the hypocrisy comes in.

As NewsBusters reported back in September of 2022, Hostin finally apologized for denying the results of the 2016 election, which she suggested was stolen by Trump and Russia, for which she called Trump an “illegitimate president.”

In response to her apology at the time, moderator Whoopi Goldberg and co-host Joy Behar were up in arms and told her she didn’t have to and that she was in the right from the beginning:

HOSTIN: I should not have said that. He was not an illegitimate president.

GOLDBERG: But that’s how you felt! You had every right to say it!

(…)

BEHAR: You were not wrong.

They said this wall also defending White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s 2016 election denialism. Hostin’s history of election denialism was not brought up by any of the cast members on Friday.

It’s [D]ifferent when they do it.

“Everything in life is relative. There is no accusation of sexual harassment or assault against her. There’s no accusation of sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old,” Navarro continued to defend Bondi. “She hasn’t beheaded a whale. She hasn’t stabbed a dead bear cub. I mean, my God.”

Hostin accused Navarro and pretend independent Sara Haines of “minimizing” Bondi’s transgressions because they would take her over Gaetz. “I would take the dead bear cub over Matt Gaetz,” Navarro quipped.

SUNNY HOSTIN: Let me say this, we’re all thrilled that Matt Gaetz – I agree with you, Alyssa, he would have been a very dangerous pick for the Department of Justice. But his new pick, Trump’s new pick, Pam Bondi. I believe she’s a dangerous pick, as well, because she is — during her — she supported Trump’s false election claims. She was involved the efforts to overturn the results. And so, that is now the person that’s going to be chief law enforcement –

[Crosstalk]

JOY BEHAR: But she’s on TV, that’s the primary prerequisite

[Crosstalk]

ANA NAVARRO: I have known Pam Bondi for many, many, many years.

HOSTIN: Election denialism is a very big deal, Ana.

[Crosstalk]

ALYSSA FARAH GRIFFIN: Sunny, we have to take the wins where we can find them.

NAVARRO: Can I continue saying this? Everything in life is relative. There is no accusation of sexual harassment or assault against her. There’s no accusation of sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old.

BEHAR: She is a woman.

FARAH GRIFFIN: She’s also qualified. She was a the Florida attorney general.

HOSTIN: There’s also accusations –

[Crosstalk]

BEHAR: One at a time. [Claps her hands to get their attention]

NAVARRO: She hasn’t beheaded a whale. She hasn’t stabbed a dead bear cub. I mean, my God.

HOSTIN: You can’t minimize some of the things that she has done and I think we have a clip of some of her former comments. Why don’t we take a look.

[Cuts to video]

PAM BONDI (as Donald Trump’s lawyer) (November 4, 2020): We are thrilled to have won Pennsylvania with 87 percent of the vote in and we’re up almost 400,000 votes. So we’re thrilled.

[Transition]

(November 5, 2020): We do have evidence of cheating. [Transition] We are not going anywhere until they declare that we won Pennsylvania. [Transition] These fake ballots that are coming in late. And back to observation, they’re not letting us watch the process

STEVE DOOCY: Pam, did you just say fake ballots?

BONDI: There could be. That’s the problem.

[Cuts back to live]

[Laughter]

HOSTIN: So, I don’t want — I don’t think we need to minimize someone like that being who is supposed to be the people’s attorney. She’s going to be Trump’s attorney.

[Crosstalk]

SARA HAINES: I would still take her over Matt Gaetz.

HOSTIN: You can take her over Matt Gaetz, but you cannot minimize –

HAINES: I’m not minimizing.

NAVARRO: I would take the dead bear cub over Matt Gaetz.

BEHAR: Robert Kennedy would also.

CNN’s Kasie: Don’t Let Election Denier Trump Distract You With Garbage Truck/McD’s Stunts!

Down to the last few days before the election, CNN’s Kasie Hunt has dropped any pretense of even-handedness, and has let her pro-Kamala flag fly.

Three days ago, we caught Kasie saying that Trump-hater par excellence David Frum’s attacks on Trump were “correct.”

Today, Hunt was clearly worried by Trump’s entertaining, attention-attracting moves of working in a McDonald’s and riding shotgun in a garbage truck. She insisted instead that voters focus on Trump’s history of election denial and hints that he might do it again this year.

Hunt insisted that the garbage truck/McD’s events were:

“Designed to get us to look away from what we shouldn’t ignore. To distract from what Trump is saying about what happens after polls close on Tuesday.”

Hunt then rolled clips of Trump responding to questions as to whether, if he lost, he’d recognize the results of the election. But whereas Hunt was surely trying to suggest that Trump would refuse to accept a defeat, his answers did little to support her hypothesis.

To the contrary, Trump told one reporter that whereas there had been some “smaller” election misconduct in Pennsylvania, “I think it’s been taken care of.”

And when another reporter asked if he’d accept the results of the election, he replied: “Sure. It’s a fair election.”

Trump’s response was in line with what Democrats are saying. Indeed, some of them are going even further, as Axios reports, suggesting that Trump is planning to cheat.

Thus, Dem Rep. Jamie Raskin has said that if Trump “won a free, fair and honest election, then we would obviously accept it.” However, Raskin said he “definitely” doesn’t assume that Trump would use free, fair and honest means to secure a victory. Trump “is doing whatever he can to try to interfere with the process.”
Along similar lines, “Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois, a senior chief deputy whip who voted to object to George W. Bush electors in 2005, said of Trump, ‘I don’t know what kind of shenanigans he is planning,’ adding: ‘We would have to, in any election … make sure that all the rules have been followed.'”
And House Rules Committee Ranking Member Jim McGovern (D-Mass.), who also objected to Trump electors in 2017, said Democrats would certify a Trump victory “assuming everything goes the way we expect it to.”

Funny how Hunt never mentioned the Democrats’ statements. Instead, Kasie concluded on this ominous note:

“When you’re out on the trail, covering a political campaign — I’ve done a number of them — the job is to report what the campaign is doing. Sure. That’s the part that they want you to see.

“But it’s also to make sure you’re reporting what they don’t want you to cover or pay attention to. Not to miss the forest for the trees.”

Translation: The “trees” that should be disregarded are Trump’s photo-ops. The “forest” to which attention must be paid is Trump’s 2020 election denial and his supposed threats to do it again.

Note: Trump isn’t known for self-deprecating humor. So his joking with a rally crowd that he took his aides’ suggestion that he wear the orange vest he had worn in the garbage truck, because it would make him look thinner, was both unusual — and perhaps a sign that he is in the good humor of a man who believes he’s going to win.

Here’s the transcript.

CNN This Morning
10/31/24
6:01 am EDT

KASIE HUNT: Garbage in, garbage out. We are five days from election day in an incredibly tight race where anything could make a difference.

Donald Trump, climbing into a garbage truck. Shall we say, striking visual designed to capitalize on President Biden’s remark that Trump’s supporters are garbage.

DONALD TRUMP: How do you like my garbage truck? This truck is in honor of Kamala and Joe Biden.

HUNT: Trump even went onstage at his rally in that bright orange vest.

TRUMP: And they said, it would be unbelievable if you could wear it on stage. I said, there’s no way I’m wearing it onstage. They said, okay, sir. I said, get me my jacket.

But if you did, you know, it actually makes you look thinner [crowd goes wild.] I said, ooh. And they got me. I said, I want to  wear it onstage.

HUNT:  Biden, of course, has said he was only referring to a single Trump supporter who called Puerto Rico garbage in a joke.

. . .

So, this garbage truck thing, not the first time that Donald Trump, the former president, but also the former reality TV star, has produced events to drive a message in a way that’s hard to look away from. That’s the point, right?

But here’s the thing. These events are also designed to get us to look away from what we shouldn’t ignore. To distract from what Trump is saying about what happens after polls close on Tuesday.

MALE REPORTER: Can you imagine any circumstance under which you would be defeated, but not say that the election was stolen?

TRUMP: If it was a corrupt election, that could happen. But so far we’re doing pretty well. They found a lot of smaller things in Pennsylvania, as you know, and I think they’ve been corrupted. And they’re taking care of it. They were corrupt. They were corrupted. But I think it’s been taken care of.

FEMALE REPORTER: Either way, will you accept the results of the election?

TRUMP: Sure. It’s a fair election.

HUNT: IF it’s a fair election, he says. So, does he think it’s going to be a fair election?

BRIAN KILMEADE: What worries you the most?

TRUMP: Cheating.

KILMEADE: Which one, though? Which state?

TRUMP: All of them. I mean, they cheat. All of them.

HUNT: All of them, he says. ALL of them!

So when you’re out on the trail, covering a political campaign — I’ve done a number of them — the job is to report what the campaign is doing. Sure. That’s the part that they want you to see.

But it’s also to make sure you’re reporting what they don’t want you to cover or pay attention to. Not to miss the forest for the trees.

ELECTION INTERFERENCE: Google Offers Users a Firehose of Legacy Media on Election Coverage

Google continues to go to great lengths to block users from seeing any right-of-center media outlets on 2024 presidential election news.

For the fifth consecutive week, Google rigged search results for “donald trump presidential race 2024,” shoving leftist and legacy media outlet articles into Americans’ faces. MRC researchers once again used AllSides “right” and “left” media bias ratings and had to dig deep to find the first right-of-center result for the Trump prompt search.

The first U.S.-based, right-leaning search result for the Trump prompt—a New York Post article—appeared as the eighth result on the fifth page of Google search results. This was the only right-of-center media outlet in the first 54 results, following 53 other results including left-of-center outlets such as Politico, CBS News and NBC News.

Filling the first few pages of results with left-of-center media and burying right-of-center media outlets has serious consequences. A November 2023 Pew Research survey showed that more and more Americans prefer using search engines to get their news, with 15 percent of adults preferring them—up from 13 percent in 2022 and 11 percent in 2011. And to say that Google gets the biggest piece of that would be an understatement. The search engine nearly eats the whole pie. Alphabet subsidiaries Google and YouTube account for 90 percent of daily internet searches.

While Fox News appeared on the first page for the prompt “kamala harris presidential race 2024,” only two U.S.-based, right-of-center results appeared among the first 45 non-sponsored search results across Google’s initial four pages. The other right-leaning media outlet article that appeared was from Fox News, appearing under a sea of outlets that AllSides describes as “lean left.” These outlets include The New York Times, CNN, CBS News, NBC News, ABC News, Politico and even Qatari-owned Al Jazeera. Each one of these publications appeared before the second Fox News article.

MRC researchers have repeatedly exposed Google’s rigged search results, including in four prior studies using the prompts “kamala harris presidential race 2024” and “donald trump presidential race 2024.” Google has repeatedly buried articles from U.S.-based “lean-right” or “right” news outlets. In past MRC studies, U.S.-based “lean right” and “right” results for the Harris prompt did not appear until pages four, eight, 11 and 13. For the Trump prompt, such results were absent until pages five, seven, 14 and 23.

Methodology

For this report, MRC Free Speech America analyzed the Oct. 29 Google search results of the innocuous words “donald trump presidential race 2024” and “kamala harris presidential race 2024.” MRC Free Speech America used a private window utilizing the Brave privacy browser to analyze Google search results to limit the influence of prior search history and tracking cookies. MRC Free Speech America also utilized the AllSides media bias chart as a gauge to determine which outlets are “right” and “lean right.” AllSides notes it has a “patent on rating bias and use[s] multiple methodologies,” not a homogenous group or an algorithm. “Our methods are: Blind Bias Surveys of Americans, Editorial Reviews by a multipartisan team of panelists who look for common types of media bias, independent reviews, and third-party data.”

Readers should be aware that this report only uses the AllSides list to analyze ratings of outlets considered by AllSides to be “right” and “lean right” and does not necessarily reflect MRC’s characterizations of these outlets.

Liberal Media Have Collective Amnesia About Their 2016 Election Denial

As early as January of 2017, Democrats were running around on liberal cable news, declaring the 2016 election stolen and Donald Trump’s presidency illegitimate. Left-wing journalists, far from pushing back against these unfounded claims, in fact amplified and repeated them. Yet this past year, many of those same journalists have repeatedly grilled Republicans and demanded that they accept the results of the 2024 election “no matter what happens.”

Talk of Russians “hacking our election” (what does that even mean?) and Trump’s supposed illegitimacy was so prevalent back that they could fill an entire weeknight edition of ABC’s World News Tonight or the NBC Nightly News. Here’s a particularly thorough one boasting a runtime of just under 24 minutes.

Of course, that all changed when Trump began challenging the results of the 2020 election. Since then, the media have coined the term “election denier,” and they are currently attempting to turn the mere questioning of election results into a de facto disqualifying act for any Republican member of Congress.

Watch the video below for a sampling of how obsessed today’s pro-DNC journalists are with demanding that Republicans never question the result of any future election:

‘They Lied’: Trump References MRC Survey, RIPS Big Tech’s Election Interference

Former President Donald Trump and popular podcast host Joe Rogan called out Big Tech’s interference in the 2020 presidential election, predicting a new era where young Americans will break free from censorship and leftist “wokeness.”

During Friday’s edition of the Joe Rogan Experience, Trump appeared to reference a 2020 Media Research Center survey, which found Big Tech’s influence titled the election in favor of Joe Biden.

According to the MRC, one in six Biden voters (17%) said they might not have supported him if they had known about Biden-related controversies, including the Hunter Biden laptop scandal revealed by the New York Post.

“Fifty-one intelligence agents came up that the laptop was from Russia. They lied. … It was Hunter’s. It was from his bed. It was Hunter’s laptop. They said it was created by Russia!” Trump said, referring to the infamous Politico letter that influenced social media companies to censor the laptop exposé just before the election.

Trump added, “They said it made a 17-point difference. That’s a big difference.” This comment appeared to cite MRC data indicating that 45.1 percent of Biden voters were unaware of the laptop scandal, with 9.4 percent stating they would not have voted for Biden had they known. This margin would have tipped Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin toward Trump.

Earlier in the podcast, Rogan scolded leftists for abandoning the First Amendment. “The rebels are Republicans now. They’re like, ‘You want to be a rebel? You want to be punk rock? You want to, like, buck the system? You’re a conservative now,” Rogan said. “Then the Liberals are now pro-silencing criticism. they’re pro-censorship online. They’re talking about regulating free speech and regulating the First Amendment. It’s bananas to watch.”

Trump agreed, contrasting the leftist shift on free speech with their willingness to use the justice system to crack down on their opponents. Specifically, Trump affirmed he has been targeted more often than the notorious, violent criminal Al Capone.

Trump has positioned himself as the pro-free speech candidate ahead of the 2024 presidential election. In a 2022 video, he said, “The censorship cartel must be dismantled and destroyed — and it must happen immediately.” Now, Trump has made it clear that maintaining free speech is more important than ever.

After all, Trump is the only sitting U.S. president ever banned by Big Tech companies. Twitter banned his account on Jan. 8, 2021, while allowing global dictators, such as Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Madur, to remain active.

AG Bailey Vows to ‘Fight Back’ Against Google’s Election Interference

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has vowed to launch an investigation into Google’s rampant election interference on Thursday, affirming that the tech giant “is waging war on the democratic process.”

In a statement posted on X, Bailey remarked, “I am launching an investigation into Google – the biggest search engine in America – for censoring conservative speech during the most consequential election in our nation’s history.”

He continued, “It’s time to fight back.”

Bailey has shown his dedication to preserving Americans’ First Amendment rights several times. In a case inherited from his predecessor, Murthy v. Missouri, he targeted the Biden administration’s censorship regime. He also submitted a brief for cases originating from Texas (NetChoice v. Paxton) and Florida (Moody v. NetChoice), retroactively defending free speech. These contributions are the primary reasons the Media Research Center awarded him a 2024 Free Speech Week.

Bailey’s announcement comes on the heels of numerous MRC Free Speech America studies on Google, which have displayed the tech giant’s interference with election search results on their platform.

In remarks to Fox Business, Bailey said, “We have reason to believe that Google is manipulating their search results to deemphasize information about the Trump campaign prior to Election Day.” He rebuked them, stating, “I will not allow Google to interfere in the most consequential election in our nation’s history.”

Top 8: CBS’s Worst Moments of Election Interference Against Conservatives

UPDATED:

CBS News has a serious addiction problem. They can’t stop using dishonest techniques to help out their liberal friends while harming conservatives.

Most recently, CBS got in trouble for their deceptive edits of their interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. The so-called “Tiffany network” aired two different answers to the same question on Israel in its 60 Minutes, First they aired a word-salad answer on the October 6 Face the Nation. But when the interview aired on October 7, the answer was entirely different.

With Harris CBS News used dishonest edits to make the Democratic presidential candidate look better. However, in the case of conservatives, CBS has a record of employing their video editors to make them look bad.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson exposed how CBS sliced and diced up his October 13, edition of CBS’s Face the Nation interview. Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has also been the victim of CBS chopping up videos.

It’s not just selective edits. CBS will target conservatives with investigative pieces based on “fake news” sources (See Rathergate). They will also set them up with ambush interviews (See Connie Chung’s interview with former House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s mother) or even cut their mic off during a live debate, as they did with VP candidate J.D. Vance.

A look through MRC’s archives shows CBS has a long history of using dishonest techniques to interfere with the election of conservative candidates.

1. RatherGate

In 2004, Dan Rather’s most corrupt act as a journalist occurred when he and producer Mary Mapes attempted an election-year hit job on then-President George W. Bush.

Just eight weeks before election day, in a September 8, 2004 report on 60 Minutes, Dan Rather claimed “new” evidence showing Bush received “preferential treatment” during his Vietnam-era service in the Texas Air National Guard.

“Newly discovered documents spark new questions,” Rather hyped that night on his CBS Evening News. “CBS News has exclusive information, including documents, that now sheds new light on the President’s service record.”

The documents in question were supposedly from Bush’s commanding officer, Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, typed on his office typewriter decades before computers and word processors became common in the workplace. It didn’t take long before observers on the Internet highlighted how the “newly discovered documents” looked more like something whipped up in Microsoft Word using the default Times Roman font than on an early 1970s typewriter.

The supposed author of the documents, Col. Killian, was no longer living, but others from the Texas Air National Guard office disputed the documents. Killian’s boss, Major General Bobby Hodges, told the Los Angeles Times that he didn’t believe the documents were real. Killian’s secretary, Marian Carr Knox, told the Dallas Morning News that “those are not real….They’re not what I typed, and I would have typed them for him.”

Instead of honestly admitting error, Rather dug in but, by September 20, Rather finally acknowledged that CBS “could no longer vouch for their authenticity.” He revealed that his source had been Bill Burkett, a left-wing Texas activist who, Rather admitted, had been trying “for several years now to discredit President Bush’s military service record.”

In the end, Mapes was fired and after the election, Rather announced he would step down in March 2005 after 24 years as anchor of the CBS Evening News.

2. Dan Rather’s Failed Ambush of George HW Bush

On Monday, January 25, 1988, Dan Rather, the anchor of the CBS Evening News at the time, laid a trap and attempted to ambush then-Vice President George H.W. Bush on live TV. Of course, Rather’s goal was to embarrass the leading Republican contender for the 1988 Republican presidential nomination.

The segment was supposed to be a “candidate’s profile.” Instead, Rather screamed at the Vice President over the Iran-Contra scandal, making it the sole topic discussed. Visibly angry, he berated the Vice President: “You’ve made us hypocrites in the face of the world!”

But Bush didn’t just sit back and take the bias. He zinged the journalist by mentioning a truly embarrassing moment for Rather. In 2008, Rich Noyes quoted from The Quest for the Presidency, recounting: “…a notorious incident several months earlier when Rather, on location in Miami, had got sore at having his newscast held up by a tennis match and had walked off his set to call New York to bitch about it.

The tennis match had ended in his absence, and CBS, with nothing else to put on the air, had gone to black — an empty screen — for six minutes. It was the ultimate embarrassment for a network…”

So when an unhinged Rather yelled and berated Bush, the Republican retorted: “It’s not fair to judge my whole career by a rehash on Iran. How would you like it if I judged your whole career by those seven minutes when you walked off the set in New York?” Bush lowered the boom: “I have respect for you, but I don’t have respect for what you’re doing tonight!”

Even Rather’s colleagues in the press were appalled. According to the February 1988 issue of the Media Research Center’s MediaWatch, 60 Minutes co-host Mike Wallace chided, “The style was wrong. Dan lost his cool.” ABC’s Sam Donaldson derided, “Rather went too far…. I don’t think we can get to a situation where we make — on our own authority— accusations.”

The cover of the February 8, 1988 issue of Time labeled it “the ambush that failed.” Then-Time associate editor (and future Obama official) Richard Stengel criticized the CBS anchor, describing the scene as “a powerful TV journalist hectoring the Vice President, who had been lured into the interview expecting that it would focus on his presidential campaign.”

3. Speaker Mike Johnson Exposes CBS for Editing Out Arguments They Didn’t Like

On October 14, 2024 House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) lashed out at CBS on X.com for how they sliced and diced his interview on the October 13 edition of Face The Nation. He tweeted about how CBS edited out five “important minutes” out of a 15-minute interview — and he exposed the video edits.

Among the sentences CBS cut were Johnson’s arguments about non-citizens voting, pointing out the “Biden Harris administration sued the governor and the state, the Commonwealth of Virginia, to try to prevent them from cleaning up their voter rolls.” CBS did it again in a follow-up when Johnson said “We passed the SAVE Act. You know, in the house, the SAVE Act says you gotta have proof of citizenship before you register to vote. And Chuck Schumer and the Democrats blocked that in the Senate.”

The CBS transcript shows what they edited out [and the viewer wouldn’t notice during the broadcast because it’s edited where the shot changes to a full-screen shot of Johnson]:

MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, the FEMA Director says there’s only $11 billion left from that $20 billion that was allocated. So that’s a different accounting than this 2% you say was distributed.

SPEAKER JOHNSON: Yeah. So they’ve obligated some funds, but they’ve only distributed 2%, [and when I was there on the ground, and you should go, I mean, bring the cameras and talk to the people there, they’ll tell you, don’t- don’t take politicians words for this or the administration’s word, talk to the people there on the ground they had not been provided the resources almost two weeks out from the storm that they desperately needed. And when I was there 13 days, post- you know, post the storm hitting that state, people are still being rescued. They’re stuck in the higher elevations in the mountains because the roads are down and all the rest. So they need every- every available resource and all hands on deck.] The rescue and recovery efforts are still going on, and then we address the rest of it. But FEMA was slow to respond. They did not do the job that we all expect and hope that they will do, and there’s going to be a lot of assessment about that as well in the days ahead.

That wasn’t the only edit. When Johnson said there was going to be “some cheating” in this election, Brennan pounced. CBS didn’t want to spread any notion that Republicans are the ones for election integrity.

MARGARET BRENNAN: You know that it is against–

SPEAKER JOHNSON: Glenn Youngkin, the governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia –

BRENNAN: The law for noncitizens to vote in federal elections that’s established law.

JOHNSON: Of course it is, of course it is, but of course it is. But here’s the problem, there’s a number of states that are not requiring proof of citizenship when illegals are noncitizens register to vote. We know that’s happening. [Look, Glenn Youngkin in Virginia, I was going to say he issued an executive order to clean up their voting rules heading into the election. Less than 30 days out, a couple of days ago, the Obama, I mean, the Biden administration, Department of Justice, Biden Harris administration, sued the governor and the state, the Commonwealth of Virginia, to try to prevent them from cleaning up their voter rolls. Their voter rolls. See, that kind of thing creates a lot of doubt and concern in the minds of a lot of the American people. Why would they do that?]

BRENNAN: But respectfully, Speaker –

JOHNSON: Everybody should want the law to be followed.

The biggest removal of Johnson’s argument came shortly after, when Brennan suggested Johnson was undermining the integrity of elections by suggesting non-citizens will vote!

CBS didn’t want any discussion of a “SAVE Act,” or how Chuck Schumer and the Democrats oppose any attempt to insure illegal immigrants don’t vote.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Respectfully, Speaker, you both, in the course of this interview, said that you do believe that states have taken measures that will help the integrity of this election

SPEAKER JOHNSON: That’s true-

BRENNAN: – and then you just also seem to undermine confidence in the integrity of the state elections –

JOHNSON: No, no. Margaret. Hold on. Wait a minute. Wait, wait just a minute. It’s not me undermining it. It’s the actions of the Biden-Harris administration and some of these states. Noncitizens are not allowed to vote under federal law.

[BRENNAN: Right.

JOHNSON: But the states have prohibited it. We passed the SAVE act. You know, in the house, the SAVE Act says you gotta have proof of citizenship before you register to vote. And Chuck Schumer and the Democrats blocked that in the Senate. We could have prevented this, the questions that people have about that, but the Democrats chose not to. They opened the border wide. A lot of people theorize that that was so that they could have non citizens to vote. These are realities, Margaret. I wish it weren’t true, but that’s what’s, that’s the concern that people have. And Wisconsin– [CROSSTALK]

BRENNAN: – But, but. People can have lots of concerns, but it is already law that noncitizens cannot vote in federal elections.

JOHNSON: It is a law. That’s correct, but we have to make sure the law is followed. And that is the whole point. That has always been the whole point of the SAVE Act and all the measures that we’ve tried to ensure. I believe, by my count, we have about 16 million illegal aliens in the country since Mayorkas and Harris and Biden opened the border wide. And because of that, there’s concern, because those people are distributed all around the country, as you know, there’s concern some of those people will try to participate in the elections.

Look, some of our House races. I believe the Republicans are going to win the House, grow the House majority, win the Senate and the White House. But in some of our House races, I mean, I have a colleague who was elected by six votes in 2020. Some of these are decided by hundreds or a few 1000s of votes. So if you have non citizens participating against the law, and you have no mechanism in some states to stop it. That is the root of so much of the concern. And of course, you know, in California, they have ballot harvesting right? Ballot harvesting is notorious for opening the door for fraud in Wisconsin, they’re going to put —

BRENNAN: — Mr. Speaker, you seem to be

JOHNSON: – In some counties unmanned ballot boxes in public parks, again

BRENNAN: Contradicting yourself. The states are run by the state government –

JOHNSON: No. I’m stating the facts, Margaret.

BRENNAN: – Not the federal government.

JOHNSON: That’s right. That’s correct. And that’s yeah we hope and pray- ]

BRENNAN: So if your issue is with certain governors, shouldn’t you be talking to them?

JOHNSON: We have been- we have been and the Republican governors have done heroic work. They’ve done their own audits of the voter rolls to try to ensure and do their best duty to make sure that this is a free, fair and legal election. We’re calling on all the governors to do the same thing, Democrat governors as well, and Democrat led states in the legislature, they need to do the same thing.

4. CBS Moderators Trample All Over Debate Rules to Fight with GOP VP Pick, Cut Off Vance’s Mic

Liberal moderators Margaret Brennan and Norah O’Donnell were so desperate to make Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) look bad, that they repeatedly broke the rules of the debate to fact-check him. And their so-called fact-checks were so wrong that Vance had to call them out for it.

CBS News agreed that they would not fact-check either candidate and would leave it up to the debaters to do that. But throughout the debate, the moderators either offered up fact-checks against Vance.

Things came to a head when Brennan delivered a dubious fact-check overlooking how the asylum process was being abused by illegal immigrants. Vance spoke up to lay out the real facts of how the system was being manipulated, ultimately leading to O’Donnell to cutting off his microphone.

5. CBS’s Lesley Stahl Scolded Trump In 2020: Hunter Biden Laptop Emails “Can’t be Verified”

CBS tried to suppress the news about Hunter Biden’s infamous laptop and the emails it contained when it came to light in 2020 after the New York Post broke the story in the final weeks of the presidential campaign. It was such a taboo subject for CBS that when President Donald Trump brought up the subject during an October 2020 60 Minutes interview with Lesley Stahl, it was edited out of the final broadcast.

Fortunately, the Trump campaign recorded the segment left on the 60 Minutes cutting room floor so you can see Stahl claim over and over that the information on Hunter Biden’s laptop “can’t be verified”:

PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Lesley, you’ve discredited yourself. When you say that you’re not going to cover Biden, you’re going to ask him what flavor ice cream he has, okay.

LESLEY STAHL: That’s not me.

TRUMP: Instead of, “Why did Hunter get three and a half million dollars from Moscow?” Instead of, “Why is an energy company paying your son $183,000 a month, or whatever they’re paying him?” And he has no experience in energy. You discredit yourself. I don’t have to discredit you.

STAHL: So this story about Hunter and his laptop, some repair shop found it, the source is Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani.

TRUMP: I don’t know anything about that. I just know it’s a laptop and they haven’t-

STAHL: And you’re making this one of the hottest, most important issues…

TRUMP: I don’t know about the two gentleman you mentioned.

STAHL: It’s an important issue-

TRUMP: It’s a very important issue to find out whether or not a man is corrupt, who’s running for president. Who’s accepted money from China, and from Ukraine, and from Russia. Yeah, I think that’s an important issue.

STAHL: All these things have been investigated and discredited.

TRUMP: It’s incredible the way you can try and say this and sit there and look me in the eye and say it. He accepted money, his family, from Russia, from Ukraine, from China and from other places. His brother who didn’t have experience became a big builder in Iraq, without experience. Take a look at what’s going on, Lesley. And then you say that shouldn’t be discussed? It’s the biggest scandal out there, Lesley.

STAHL: And you think it’s the biggest issue to campaign on?

TRUMP: I think it’s one of the biggest scandals I’ve ever seen, and you don’t cover it. You want to talk about-

STAHL: Well, because it can’t be verified.

TRUMP: You want to talk about insignificant things.

STAHL: I’m telling you.

TRUMP: Of course it can be verified. Excuse me, they found a laptop. Lesley, listen.

STAHL: It can’t be verified.

TRUMP: What can’t be verified?

STAHL: The laptop.

TRUMP: Why do you say that? Even the family hasn’t… The family on the laptop… He’s gone into hiding for five days, he’s gone into hiding.

STAHL: He’s preparing for your debate.

TRUMP: Oh, it’s taking him five days to prepare? I doubt it, I doubt it. Okay, go ahead.

6. Connie Chung Cons Newt’s Mom: “Whisper It to Me, Just Between You and Me”

Hoping to boost the ratings for an upcoming Eye to Eye with Connie Chung, CBS News managed to mar Newt Gingrich’s first day as Speaker on January 4, 1995. The day before, CBS released the text of an exchange taped 14 days earlier between Connie Chung and Newt’s mother. Chung coaxed Kathleen Gingrich into telling what Newt thought of Hillary Clinton. Posing the now infamous “Why don’t you just whisper it to me, just between you and me,” Mrs. Gingrich whispered “She’s a bitch.”

CBS was engulfed in criticism for using a statement which many thought Chung made clear was “off the record.”

CBS News President Eric Ober bizarrely complained to The Washington Post: “It’s a legitimate, very good interview that has unfortunately been reduced to one five-letter summary.” Chung introduced the actual piece on the January 5, 1995 Eye to Eye by saying, “You may have heard one small portion of this interview. Now you will see it in context.” It seems both forgot it was CBS which promoted the excerpt and showed it on CBS This Morning, CBS Evening News and Up to the Minute.

7. DeSantis Smashes CBS Reporter’s Fake Vaccine Narrative, So CBS Takes Him Out of Context

CBS ran a malicious and deceptive hit piece against the Florida governor Ron DeSantis on the April 4, 2021 edition of 60 Minutes. Correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi’s whole report proposed DeSantis led a “pay for play” rollout of the COVID vaccine in his state. She spent the majority of the time speaking to his critics, including West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James who alleged wealthy communities were “jumping the line” to procure the vaccine. “It sounds like the Hunger Games!” an alarmed Alfonsi, seriously said.

She touted other critics like Democrat State Rep. Omari Hardy blasting DeSantis for not prioritizing minorities for getting the vaccine before seniors.

At a press conference, the CBS correspondent confronted DeSantis, accusing him of a “pay for play” scheme with the vaccine rollout, because he gave the most popular grocery chain in the state, Publix, the rights to distribute the vaccine in certain counties, weeks after receiving donations to his campaign from the store (which also donated to Democrats.)

However, CBS completely cut out DeSantis’s thorough takedown of Alfonsi’s claim. In the original press conference, he explains for nearly two minutes how wrong the media’s assessment of this has been. “You don’t care about the facts,” he blasted Alfonsi.

Emails from the camp of DeSantis revealed the shady way the CBS 60 Minutes team operated before their hatchet job suggesting (without actual connecting evidence) that DeSantis engaged in a “pay to play” scheme with the Publix supermarket chain on vaccine distribution.

8. CBS Pushes Phony Cocaine Story About George W. Bush

Back in 2000, 60 Minutes devoted a whole segment to crackpot author J.H. Hatfield and his book trashing George W. Bush called Fortunate Son.

They put on this Lesley Stahl segment despite Hatfield being unable to prove Bush was arrested for cocaine possession and despite Hatfield paying for a hit man. Their website announced: “Just because he lied to his editors about being a convicted felon isn’t a good enough reason for those editors to doubt his book.”

While there is less than three weeks to go until Election Day 2024, there is still time for CBS to get in a few more cheap shots against conservative candidates. Consider this a warning to be on the lookout for more CBS shenanigans.
