During the Cold War, CIA chemist Sidney Gottlieb became one of America’s most secretive intelligence operatives, overseeing experiments in mind control and developing chemical weapons for covert operations. As the driving force behind Project MKUltra, he supervised research involving LSD, hypnosis and other techniques, including experiments conducted on unsuspecting civilians, prisoners and psychiatric patients. His work also extended to assassination schemes targeting foreign leaders such as Fidel Castro and Patrice Lumumba, with proposals involving poisoned cigars, contaminated personal items and other concealed weapons. When congressional investigations began exposing the CIA’s activities in the 1970s, much of the MKUltra documentation had already been destroyed, and Gottlieb retired without facing criminal prosecution. This documentary examines the disturbing contradictions of a scientist who helped develop some of the CIA’s most controversial operations before spending his later years farming and volunteering for humanitarian causes.
