How fear of communist brainwashing fueled MKUltra
The Cold War

Project MKUltra was one of the most controversial covert programs of the Cold War. Officially authorized in 1953, it sought to explore behavioral modification through drugs, hypnosis, and other methods. Later Senate testimony described it as an umbrella for dozens of sub-projects, some involving unwitting human subjects. Experiments ranged from LSD testing in safehouses to research on sensory deprivation and interrogation techniques. The program was fueled by fears that the Soviet Union and China had mastered “brainwashing.” Its exposure in the 1970s revealed ethical violations and damaged public trust in U.S. intelligence agencies. Despite years of research, the CIA ultimately found no reliable method to control the human mind.
