CIA MKUltra documents exposed experiments on unknowing Americans
FORGOTTEN HISTORY

During the Cold War, the CIA launched MKUltra, a secret research program that used LSD, hypnosis, electroshock, and psychological manipulation in an attempt to investigate interrogation techniques and the possibility of controlling human behavior. This documentary examines how Sidney Gottlieb oversaw experiments involving more than 100 research projects, including operations conducted through universities, hospitals, prisons, and secret apartments where some participants were tested without their knowledge or consent. It also investigates the 1953 death of Army scientist Frank Olson after he was secretly given LSD, the controversial psychiatric experiments conducted by Dr. Donald Cameron in Montreal, and Operation Midnight Climax in New York and San Francisco. The story follows the destruction of MKUltra records in 1973, the discovery of seven surviving boxes of documents in 1977, and the congressional investigations that exposed abuses within American intelligence agencies. Although much of the program’s history has been documented, the destruction of evidence and unresolved questions surrounding Olson’s death continue to raise concerns about government secrecy, medical ethics, and the limits of national security.
